About this deal

The main protagonists are two young girls (Lizzie is twelve) who become detectives and try to solve the mystery behind an attack on Lizzie’s father at the theatre. An engaging illustrated early reader book, this is the first in the series to feature Lizzie (who is deaf) and Lucky the dog.

The book takes a dramatic start as Elizabeth Sancho’s father, Ignatius Sancho takes the stage to perform The William Shakespeare play of Othello; he was to be the first black man to play the black character of Othello. The fact that it was also based upon my favourite Shakespeare play Othello, also made it an instant hit with me. Her father is to play Othello, a character in a play by William Shakespeare – he is the first Black man to do so, making it a momentous performance in history. I heard about this adventure novel in a school reading list and I was told if I enjoyed Murder Most Unladylike then I would enjoy this.

As they go deeper and deeper into the mystery, someone realises how close they are to the truth and tries to silence them, but Lizzie and Belle won’t be silenced easily. They team up, making notes and following suspects – until they’re plunged into terrible danger themselves. A brilliantly written, action packed and exciting 1700's detective adventure story told through a perspective and voice rarely explored in fiction during this time, let alone children's fiction, two young.I am currently editing my first YA novel which I hope to be able to share with you all in the future. It was a look at history through the eyes of young ladies who were close to my own age and thus grew my love of historical fiction. My favourite moment in the story was very close to the end, when the mischievous duo tricked their enemy! The support and passion within the Black community (and Lizzie’s own family) is brilliantly depicted, shot through as it is with sadness about their brothers and sisters who are still in slavery. But that still left me wondering what else was there for a pre teen or teen after we aged out of American girls . Can Lizzie and Belle get to the bottom of what is going on in the theatrical setting of the era, and protect Lizzie’s father; or in fact can they even protect themselves. Children are launched into the world of Georgian London and follow the burgeoning friendship and investigation of Lizzie and Belle who are determined to solve this mystery. Their worlds collide when disaster strikes at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and Lizzy’s father’s life is put under threat. The next day Lizzie set off for the Kenwood house, the residence of Belle, where she lived with her Uncle and Aunt. Lizzie in depth, what she thought of certain individuals and their actions, and comments on her thoughts in general. But when they catch each other’s eyes at the theatre one night, each is delighted to see another Black girl her own age. The Lizzie and Belle Mysteries: Drama and Danger is a children’s story suitable for 8 -12 years of age and above.
