For example (not a spoiler), on their cross US journey, Atlee and her side-kick stop at a deserted, barely lit rest area with not another vehicle or person in sight. She can have no idea as to how deeply this will blow her world apart as she is warned off looking further into the case by her superiors in the FBI or face suspension. She knows about killers and perhaps understands them better than any profiler in the FBI, but it soon becomes clear that she will need to put her skills to the ultimate test in this investigation. After taking her new position in Shattered Rock, Arizona, near the Grand Canyon National Park, Atlee begins investigating her sister’s disappearance in her free time. It started off well in the first chapter but became a big mess that was devoid of any tension but chockful of all possible action-thriller tropes possible.Much later, when David thanked her for being the spark that ignited his writing career, she revealed that she'd given him the notebook to keep him quiet, "because every mom needs a break now and then. Baldacci’s latest book is prefaced by a letter to readers, introducing his first female lead – FBI Agent Atlee Pine. Feeling out of her depth Pine seeks support from her bosses and soon realises that this support is not forthcoming. Scott Turow, Number one New York Times bestselling author A fabulous new character from a master storyteller. And her counterpart is Sam Kettler, an ex-military guy suffering from PTSD from his time serving (don’t forget the love interest).

Baldacci skirts the political line of being anti big government by emphasising the role of overreach within government by individuals. HUGE things happened in the book, but that ending was so ridiculously simple that I don’t believe it. This is not the only person missing from the area, so one could could lead to another for Atlee as she profiles the crime. The narrations by newcomer Brittany Pressley (female voices) and veteran Baldacci-reader Kyf Brewer (male voices) were both excellent.There are two black characters, but one is just a guy we meet in the gym and who we don’t even know his name, and another guy who is only a taxi driver. I am striving to produce reviews that help you find books that you want, or avoid books that you wish to avoid. So, though the novel perhaps dipped into themes of less interest to me (I’m sure they’ll be more appealing to others more interested in Russia, South Korea and America! She had sat in a group counseling session and had listened as the attendees went around the room discussing their most personal issues.

When her turn had come, Pine, who had been shot, stabbed, and attacked multiple times in the line of duty, had started to sweat and taken the coward’s way out—she had passed on her turn and never gone back. David Baldacci introduces a new lead character – FBI Agent Atlee Pine – in the first of a series dedicated to her. As she gets closer to the answers though she finds more and more government agencies will do all they can to stop her. All of these great interesting people involved and that was the best story line he could come up with? A mile-a-minute thriller that proves once again why David Baldacci has readers the world over flocking for more !A dead mule, a missing person, smallest FBI office possible with a female agent and awesome secretary, National Park Service Rangers, a Navajo Nation, hunky Sam, mules, mystery with a cave and all this nestled in the Grand Canyon area!
