About this deal
The tiny lantern-shaped copper pot stills are among the smallest in Scotland; their rich, fruity malt is then slowly condensed in wooden worm tubs that sit outside among the rooftops, before being aged in oak casks for at least 14 years. Great malt I have been drinking malts for over 50 years mostly islay malts and also like Talisker 10 year old.
To my surprise, I actually preferred the Aberfeldy 12 from the pack, but would reach for Clynelish 14 over this.Plus, Nick Offerman apparently drinks it as a deviation from his Lagavulin fixation, if you believe his (Diageo sponsored…) “ My Tales Of Whisky” video clips. Inoffensive and smooth, not improved with a drop of water, but some pleasant notes of malt and bitter orange. Oban is a genuinely segregated refinery, roosted on the westernedge of the Scottish terrain at the extremely top of the Kintyre promontory. Oban also offers tours and tastings for visitors to learn about the history and production of their whiskies.
The spirit is matured in a combination of American oak and European oak casks, which gives it a unique and complex flavour profile. A review of this single malt is definitely long overdue, and I realized that rectifying this gap in Malt’s archives would be great for the site and its readers while also serving as an excellent way of getting myself back into the rhythms of writing.
