About this deal

Gaming is a performance metric that matters to the majority of DIY consumers, especially to the enthusiast crowd that TweakTown caters to. Sector Size Flexibility: The option to reformat and select between 512 bytes or 4K bytes sector sizes is a huge plus. Micron’s NAND usually operates within a very tight latency profile, and here we see that tendency carry over to Sabrent’s 8TB Rocket Q.

The Rocket Q wasn’t as fast at copying large files as the Samsung 970 EVO Plus, Sabrent Rocket NVMe 4. For the most consistent performance under prosumer-like use or large file transfers, it would be best to direct some airflow to the drive or place it under your motherboard’s M. Flash storage does wear out over time, and while I haven’t seen signs of slowing down yet, it’s a consideration for the years ahead, especially if you’re writing terabytes worth of data regularly.

We tested Sabrent’s 8TB Rocket Q at a queue depth (QD) of 1, representing most day-to-day file accesses at various block sizes. Sure, there are cheaper options out there—and if you’re not pushing the envelope, you might want to consider them.

If you are not sure what speed your drives are running at with everything connected, then simply checking the BIOS/UEFI under the drive details pages should show information on the speed/lanes utilised. Unless you are doing 8K shooting and converting on the go I dont think one needs as much as 8TB of storage on the laptop. This is, in fact, also a crucial bit of information when comparing to QLC of the same density that will have twice the planes and CuA in place.

From a system resource perspective, we configured each VM with 16 vCPUs, 64GB of DRAM and leveraged the LSI Logic SAS SCSI controller. The 8TB Rocket Q fell back when we pushed harder with PCMark 10’s Full system Drive benchmark, though. Dave has been gaming since the days of Zaxxon and Lady Bug on the Colecovision, and code books for the Commodore Vic 20 (Death Race 2000!

This test uses SQL Server 2014 running on Windows Server 2012 R2 guest VMs and is stressed by Quest’s Benchmark Factory for Databases. Averaging 210 MBps-per-watt during our 50GB file transfer, the Rocket Q edges ahead of the faster Rocket NVMe 4.The Rocket Control Panel is similar to SSD toolboxes from other manufacturers, offering monitoring information and firmware updates. This SSD comes with a 3-year warranty which gives an added sense of security, although, in the perfect world, I’d never have to use it. There are 8-pieces of KIOXIA BiCS5 TLC NAND flash memory on this SSD (4-on each side) and we can see that Sabrent has elected to highlight the Phison PS5018-E18 8-channel NVMe controller with its own branding. The changes to BiCS5 are an important consideration when comparing this particular SKU to the older Rocket 4 Plus SKUs that were upgraded to 176-layer B47R TLC from Micron.
