About this deal

It was also interesting to see how two brothers from the same home could end up in different lives but also the impact that Stuart's crime had on Alix. It’s written by Alix Sharpley, his elder brother, and describes in great detail events such as their childhood and the murder charge itself. He was forthcoming in his condemnation of a man who, to this day, refuses to reveal where her body is.

Stuart Campbell was a healthy, happy child but I think at some point the alluded to event did happen in turn this changed him, he became harder, more secretive. A man has told how he knew his brother was guilty of killing a missing schoolgirl after just 10 minutes in his company. Have to say that it doesn’t really sit well with me that a book is written and profited from on the back of such a tragedy unless money is being raised for suitable charities. The author does a good job of detailing their family history, with the early years’ chapters interspersed with later year ones featuring information from around the time Danielle went missing and the subsequent trial. Sharkey interweaves the story of his brother's arrest and conviction with their childhood in Tilbury, England, where they endured years of abuse at the hands of their alcohol-addicted father. Campbell does not give any answers in the birthday and Christmas cards he sends his mother from prison. I found the method for this book confusing at times as we were jumping back and forth through the timeline and this was confusing for me. I tend to agree with what I read and hear that without full disclosure of both guilt and the location where Danielle's body is to allow her parent the opportunity lay her to rest Stuart should not be given the luxury of parole.

When I read this I thought, well, that is the same pattern as the killer years later — he will never admit his crime, will never apologize. This isn’t a book about the author’s “brother the killer” per se but about how the author discovers his brother’s crimes, and reflects on his family at a kind of historical crossroads out of a gritty, industrial, and violent era into the modern technological era—Stuart’s crimes was one of the first where cellphone towers could triangulate the killers whereabouts. From playing the old battler Campbell in Braveheart, Lord Commander Mormont in Game of Thrones, Father Christmas in Nania, and even a fighter pilot in Battle of Briton, he’s done it all!I would have liked to learned more about all the Jones family including Debbie and her parents as well as Danielle and her parents. The author has done really well to not make the book all about himself or his brother, voicing his concerns on many occasions throughout the book of the anguish and upset Danielle's family are still going through. Sharkey wonders what happened at the special school his brother was sent to as a vulnerable youth; the same school where the headmaster was later convicted of sexually abusing students. HarperCollins has acquired a book by journalist Alix Sharkey exploring his experience growing up with a brother now imprisoned for the murder of teenager Danielle Jones.

But if you come into this knowing it's an exploration of the crime through the lens of a memoir about the author and his brother, you'll understand in advance what you're getting into. Alix and his sister both grew up to have successful careers, Stuart entered a life of criminality at a young age. This hard hitting memoir for the brother of convicted killer was an eye-opening account of his life growing up in an abusive environement and how this could have contributed to the path that his brother took. I read it as I wanted to understand how you would feel if you found out someone you knew - were related to - had committed a horrific crime.
