About this deal

Brash, strong willed, she's constantly in trouble with her superiors because she is so focused on finding the truth. A permit is granted to excavate a field beside an old children's home, leading to human remains being discovered and old employees suddenly picked off one by one. This is the first of a series, and I was intrigued by DI Kim Stone, and her team, from the start, growing to love their tenacious and relentless efforts to bring justice to those who have been lost. With her home and purse left untouched, this is clearly no robbery gone awry with the victim an accidental casualty.

The changes in location and time flow very nicely and really help move the plot along and keep things interesting. I loved the sheer heaviness of the tone, the silence as I read only added to the terrific atmosphere, of waiting to see what the team would find out next, because I knew that they would. Maybe it is just me, but has anyone else noticed the trend to have female investigators have troubled pasts? I respected her for the way she worked, but I also felt like perhaps, her ferocity kept her mind from wandering off down other roads. I. Kim Stone's inability to hide her feelings and a genuine rapport and respect for her team that shines through and her innate empathy makes her a character to vie for.

At thirty-four, single, with a passion for restoring her Triumph Thunderbird, listening to classical music and being incapable of winding down, Kim Stone is refreshingly free of the now familiar demons of fictional detectives and all the better for it. Relatively short chapters, which I personally love, following the investigation, the murders and even have a few wee chapters dottered in the book from the killer giving an insight into their history and mind set. The story was complex but in the best way possible as it was fairly easy to follow and only added to the greatness of the story. I have a ton of books I need to read/review, but I had to stop and read another in this series instead.

When a headmistress is murdered and it is discovered she had ties to an old children’s home where a body has been unearthed, it is D. Fans of Rachel Abbott, Val McDermid and Mark Billingham will be gripped by this exceptional new voice in British crime fiction. The thriller was already above average from the start, with jaw dropping twists, and a furiously frustrating mystery that I simply could not puzzle out. This book just blew me away… I LOVED and ADORED this book and I am chomping at the bit to get onto the next already! With just over three weeks to go until the release of Dead Souls, the sixth book in the Kim Stone series by Angela Marsons, I thought it was an opportune moment to go back and look over the first five books in the series. She has a past, some issues but isn't flawed as so many detectives with a penchant for booze, drugs or risky sexual encounters. The excitement in a thriller is to gradually get at a conclusion, it’s to monitor the detective’s deductions, it’s to see how a clue or idea become a lead. I was totally invested in the life and story of main character Lottie and couldn’t rest until I knew her story. A haunting prologue sees a group of five amid the bleak and unremitting landscape of the Black Country making a silent pact as a body is buried in 2004.
