About this deal

In the most simplest of descriptions, cutting is the result of such great pent-up emotions that the only way to release them, the only way to survive them, is to destroy yourself, remind yourself that because you can feel the pain means that you're alive and that to be able to feel pain you caused yourself gives you control over the pain others are causing you. Jen is instantly out of her depth, surrounded by stories of unimaginable suffering and increasing tensions within the camp. While this short novel is somewhat dated in terms of technology and length on inpatient treatment, young readers may be able to recognize themselves in the characters and seek appropriate help from parents or other adults.

I have read a lot of mental illness books this year and this one was something I could totally relate to. Millicent Spark, make-up artist and murderer, has been set free after twenty-four years spent in the gaol for a crime she still considers herself innocent of. She now lives in Glasgow with loyal friend Vivian and when an advertisement for a room to rent in her house brings student Jerry Kelly, a film buff, into her orbit. Please send an enquiry with your address details for a quote if you are interested in purchasing a copy.

In an over-saturated market, finding a new voice with something compelling to say in the crime writing field can be difficult. This part of the story was a bit of a mystery, and I was holding out hope that it would go more into depth and the story would finally have some purpose.

And while, I suppose, this novel would be good for someone who wanted to get the gist of this (but why on earth would you only settle for the gist of it? To reduce cutting to something so near-meaningless is an insult to sufferers of self-injury everywhere.

The tension builds up to almost unbearable levels by the time Jerry has to reveal a deadly secret he’s been keeping from Millicent. She doesn't cut herself because she feels she has to, or to release any kind of pain, it's just something she does every now and then. Millie and Jerry easily score points off each other in conversations meant to establish who has the best trove of trivia about the movie industry. This triggered his interest and curiosity about a horror film that was never released, Mancipium, directed by acclaimed giallo Italian director, Alessandro Salerno, one of the most horrific movies ever made, of such evil, a movie that generated outlandish rumours and gossip in the absence of barely any facts, such as many apparently involved in its production and those who saw it dying. She has been out for a year after serving a 24 year sentence for killing her boyfriend in 1994 although she never admitted to the crime. This book was on the softer side of things, relatively speaking, and honestly a light read, with a hopeful touch at the end, especially when her dad stepped up. Later, a chance encounter with a dated photograph hanging on the wall of the Roman Fort Hotel makes Millicent question everything she thought she knew and realises she must chase this lead wherever it takes her to find out the truth and clear her name. Thanks to NetGalley and Little, Brown Book Group UK for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

That horror movie, ‘Mancipium’ , was never officially released, and on the internet grapevine it has the reputation of being cursed: almost everybody linked to the movie has died or disappeared shortly after production finished and the original reels were stolen. Hibo states many statistics in the book and it would be impossible to quote them all in this review. After finishing McCormick's novella Cut I inwardly debated whether it took some inspiration from Kayser's Girl, Interrupted, Anderson's Speak, and the 'anonymous' teen chestnut Go Ask Alice or if it just shamelessly / derivatively cherry-picked the gut-punch aspects of those works. The main problem with this novel for myself was how I could not, no matter how hard I tried, connect with the main character. Written for tweens and young teens, CUT is a good introduction to the problems and treatment for the mental health issues many teen girls face. She goes to therapy everyday and tells vague stories about her life that really don't seem to totally relate to her problem.
