About this deal

And I was unhappy until I started taking photographs as a way to help illustrate a book cover or something like that.

A feminist classic celebrating life, love and friendship, as Kitty Grady explores, death and stillness are only ever just around the corner.

BYWAYS includes previously unpublished personal black-and-white stills that reflect a life spent looking and telling stories through images. Byways’ is the first monograph by the legendary Oscar-winning cinematographer Sir Roger A Deakins, best known for his collaborations with directors such as the Coen brothers, Sam Mendes and Denis Villeneuve. With Byways already receiving rave reviews since its August release, many are eager to discover whether another book will follow. He started in documentaries, shooting many in Africa as well as covering the Whitbread Round the World Yacht race that required him to work for more than 9 months as a crew member while filming a documentary.

Byways' includes previously unpublished black-and-white photographs spanning five decades, from 1971 to the present. These images are gathered here for the first time and attest to a keenly ironic English sensibility, while also documenting a vanishing postwar Britain. Some photos in the book are purely there because they stand in for a part of my life shooting documentaries, like the round-the-world yacht race. Byways is the kind of book I find myself picking up almost absentmindedly when I have some time and want to go exploring.Although there are a couple images that have some connection to the films (one is a shot of James Bond’s iconic Aston Martin db5 sitting on a Skyfall location in Scotland, parked next to a folding chair that says “Artist” and pair of black high heels – Judy Dench’s?
