About this deal

You and a group of friends can take on the role of detectives, working together to solve a murder mystery. These also include various ability cards, which can be played to steal cards from opponents’ hands, have all players pass their hand to the player on their left, or just act as blank false evidence. This review uses an affiliate link which we may receive a small commission from if you purchase through the link. Adding fun and clever card play with the False Evidence cards which really do mix up the game quite a bit.

But if you get even one of the four components wrong, you’ll be irreversibly eliminated from the round (which may be more desirable than you’d think; more on this later). Or, to trick others into thinking they don't have that card, when in fact they do, so they start to think they may be in the folder. Can you piece together the evidence to figure out who did it, how they did it, and most importantly, why? If no trade is made, then the starting player can simply discard one card from their hand to the central pile and replace it with a new card from the top of the draw pile. Place the main board and dice into the centre of the table, then separate the deck of cards into the five types.Using 44 beautifully illustrated cards, players take turns trading evidence to get closer to the truth.

It removes the tedious die rolling and slow progress of moving from one room to another, and focuses purely on the deduction and deception. Hi, I was recently in Wal-Mart when I saw the Casefile board game (along with Hunt-a-killer) and I decided to get it for family game night. Be the first detective to solve this crime by correctly naming the suspect, weapon, motive, and location of Casey’s murder and bring the killer to justice! And the interaction between players, trading evidence, tricking others with false evidence, and mixing things up with the cards you can play, is a lot of fun.The idea of the game is to be the first detective to find out where the crime occurred, why the victim killed and what weapon was used to commit the murder and then catch the killer using deduction skills, evidence cards, truth and deception to crack the case. Put yourself in the detective’s shoes and trade evidence with other players to get closer to the truth. It would have been interesting if the game had come with a number of different cases from the podcast, and you can chose a random one each game to try and solve. When that rulebook is complicated, or long, it can be a bit of a chore to learn the game and teach everyone else.

Later, I have the evidence they’ve just asked about, but I drew it last round so no one else has seen it; should I hold off revealing that I have it, or will the other players do the same, allowing the active player to draw a card for free and gain an edge anyway? I’ve played the requisite rounds of Monopoly which have dragged to the point of family blowouts and beyond.

However (and this is why I detest hidden information and traitor mechanics in games), you quickly realise that when presented the opportunity the average player will consistently lie to you or screw you over, even if it sets back everyone - including them - in the process. We like all types of games but particularly like ones where you need to think, using logic and deduction to win. The game is played until a player guesses the answers correctly or all players are knocked out through wrong guesses. Some more expansive titles even require multiple ‘practice’ or ‘open-hand’ sessions to parse everything. When you’re playing a game that’s entirely chance, you might as well all be rolling dice to see who throws a six first.
