About this deal

When Cicely Mary Barker wrote and illustrated her first book, Flower Fairies of the Spring, little could she have imagined that it would be the foremost title in a best-selling series that remains beloved almost 100 years later.

We have the smaller book of flower fairies for Spring - this book is a big heavy book including all of the seasons, hedgerows, trees, meadows. This book has lovely poetry, which at times I struggle with since I am not that much into poetry, but the drawings, colorings, the feel of the book just makes you want more. This book was also another reread, but it felt very much like a new book to me, because it had been so long since I actually read through some of the poems! Printed full-colour throughout, featuring all existing fairy illustrations, plus further decorative line drawings. All in poetry form, with the paintings as fresh as they day were were completed, a clear index provided for favourites to be quickly found, this is a perfect choice for all ages to share and enjoy. She found wider acclaim as an artist with her delightful Flower Fairies books, the first of which, Flower Fairies of the Spring, was printed in 1923. This new Folio Society box set sees Barker’s exquisite paintings and nature-inspired poems presented as a complete collection, in an exclusive new layout that best displays these imaginative illustrated verses. With fresh new title pages and endpapers, reset text and printed on a fine quality paper, these new editions make a charming gift for all Flower Fairy enthusiasts.

Thank you Penguin books for bring back to life the magical world of one of the greatest authors of all time! An important factor to it's charm is that CMB drew the picture and then wrote the poems, truly capturing the personality of it all. Like the Pre-Raphaelite painters whom she so much admired, she believed in recreating the beauty of nature in art and in drawing from life. Perfect for fans of all ages, this wonderful collection includes all the original Flower Fairy poems and illustrations by Cicely Mary Barker from the classic books. This collector's favorite has been redesigned and now features a lavish, eye-catching jacket with silver foil. This book was acquired as a gift for my father and the little figurines we have cherished for over a decade. CMB's fairies are full of exuberance and joy (and, sometimes, the gentle pause of contemplation) love of nature and the wonder of childhood. Not only does it work as a collection of poems, but it also helps teaches children about flowers and plants and enriches nature for them. I first saw this lady's work as a child and learnt the names of many flowers, trees and shrubs from them. I think it's the sort of book that you read to your children or grandchildren and it becomes a family heirloom and creates wonderful memories.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. No part of this excerpt may be reproduced or reprinted without permission in writing from the publisher. It is too bad that Barker did not have access to the internet, or she would have found flowers for "U" and "X": "ursinia" and "xylobium. Cicely Mary Barker was the illustrator who created the famous Flower Fairies; those ethereal smiling children with butterfly wings.

Each poem is individually presented on the facing page to its relevant painting, just as in the first editions of Barker’s little volumes, while our font has been carefully selected for its close resemblance to the original. To turn the pages is to enter another world, one where beauty and joy leap out with a laugh, banishing everyday cares and recreating that bright pleasure experienced when really looking properly at the flowers and countryside. Her plants and flowers were observed with complete botanical accuracy and in the fairies themselves she captured perfectly the unselfconscious grace of children, whom she used to sketch in her sister's school. Years ago I wore out my little Flower Fairy books and it's delightful to be able to replace them - poor broken tatty things that they are - with a big, fancy all inclusive book!
