About this deal
Na última parte 'A dream is not a dream', Patti conta sobre o convite que recebeu para visitar a casa de Camus numa cidade no interior da França. Patti’s writing is incredible, it’s just be warned that this isn’t the kind of memoir you might be expecting. Time and again, we hear that Patti Smith 'travels light'--which is interesting to me, in that yes, she packs in a minute, heads out to pay devotion to any number of cultural figures--in this section its Simone Weil, who merges with Modiano and that Estonian film.
Besides being a beautifully phrased phrase, her humility before other great works of literature is quite winning. A work of creative brilliance may seem like magic-its source a mystery, its impact unexpectedly stirring.
Smith says books or songs or films are triggers (oh, that’s a term Richard Hugo uses, in The Triggering Town) for her creative activity, for writing.Patti Smith first presents an original and beautifully crafted tale of obsession--a young skater who lives for her art, a possessive collector who ruthlessly seeks his prize, a relationship forged of need both craven and exalted.
I was excited when Devotion was announced, and when it was explained to be a treatise about her writing and process (although she does delve into that in M Train a bit).If only all of her musings and introspection on the mystical processes of birthing a piece of writing could have produced something worth reading. Devotion is short enough to devour at one enjoyable sitting and thought-provoking enough to deserve re-reading.
