About this deal

And, you might have noticed, I purposely did not Americanize the words in my review that she used in her memoir.

She was living in Gowan Bank, Kineton Green Road, Olton, Solihull in 1905–06 when she recorded the notes. The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady beautifully documents the changing of the seasons through the record and illustration of local flora and fauna throughout the year.

I understand you will use my personal data to improve services and send me marketing communications. Holden was made famous by the posthumous publication, in 1977, of her Nature Notes for 1906 under the title The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady. While reading this book from cover to cover may feel a bit dry, the watercolor sketches are a delight to look upon.

Climbing up the banks to meet them are tall purple fox-gloves and nodding heads of grasses heavy with pollen, mingled with Purple and Yellow Hatches and Clover blossom. All the charm and beauty of the original remains intact in this facsimile, with Holden's carefully handwritten favorite poems, personal thoughts, observations of the wildlife she saw in her native Warwickshire; and remarks on her travels throughout England and Scotland. This souvenir of a bygone era serves not only as a calming touchstone, but a reminder that as long as we choose to see it, we are still surrounded by beauty and grace. Her paintings were often exhibited from 1890–1907 by the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, and by the Royal Academy of Arts in 1907 and 1917. The author's gentle yet astute observations of the natural world around her have always captivated me. There were two dents in the top edges of the hard cover, caused I think by the postman shoving it through the letterbox.
