Locations in the area included Todmorden, Luddenden, Mytholmroyd, Bradford, Keighley, Sowerby Bridge, Hebden Bridge, and Heptonstall.Ryan increasingly concerns his family by asking questions about his father and even suggests Royce should be forgiven. The first series of Happy Valley received some complaints about its depiction of violence against women, but it was a massive ratings and critical success, so it came as no surprise when a second run was commissioned. Royce, whom the court has forbidden from having contact with Ryan, uses Wealand to try to build a relationship with Ryan and get revenge on Catherine. All 12 episodes from the first two series of the BBC drama starring Sarah Lancashire as a police sergeant in a rural West Yorkshire valley. It won the 2015 BAFTA Award for Best Drama Series, and won another BAFTA for Best Drama for the second series. In October 2020, Wainwright confirmed that there would be a third series and that she was in the "early stages" of writing it. Just when it seems like Catherine is gaining control over her life, she discovers that Tommy, whom she holds responsible for her daughter's suicide, has been released from prison after serving time for other offences. In the first series, Catherine Cawood (Lancashire) receives a visit from Kevin Weatherill (Steve Pemberton), a distressed member of the Yorkshire community she oversees, and is drawn into a ransom case in which the life of Ann Gallagher (Charlie Murphy) is at stake. When Catherine finds out, she temporarily blocks contact with the three of them and presents Ryan with an ultimatum.

Although Lancashire is certainly the dominating force, there are other superb performances that deserve to be mentioned, including Siobhan Finneran as her recovering alcoholic sister Clare, and a pre-fame James Norton as Royce. Without fear of contradiction this series must contain one of the most fearful psychopathic killers on TV - and could live next door! Wainwright gave us what we wanted: a happy ending for a character who truly deserves it"; Peter Stanford writing in the Telegraph highlighted the various religious themes, with Cawood taking on "the appearance of a living saint" amidst the evil and misery of Happy Valley. Huddersfield, Halifax, Bradford, Leeds and other West Yorkshire cities are mentioned, though not main filming locations. But the case becomes even more shocking when it emerges that Catherine knows the victim – something that could have serious repercussions for both herself and her family.

After watching the first three episodes of the season, Wainwright didn´t like some directorial choices made by Patrick Harkins and decided to reshoot some scenes herself, hence her credit as a director, but not co-director, on those episodes. A body is discovered and the victim’s injuries bear a striking similarity to a string of other murders over the previous few months, suggesting a serial killer is on the loose.
