About this deal

Bear, Squirrel and now Chicken make a new sound, a new beat, a new rhythm and they realise how perfect they all fit together. These books are designated "birthday books” and given to your child first before they are entered into the regular library rotation. The expressions on the characters' faces and the body language is subtle but easy for children to point out - chicken feels sad here, squirrel is being mean here. I understand I can change my preference through my account settings or unsubscribe directly from any marketing communications at any time. It seems that he likes the ‘ nice change to do things alone, whatever I want to, all on my own’… or could it be that Squirrel is about to wake up to what matters?

While the premise of the story is all about friendship and appreciating our friends, I also found the story to be a bit problematic. Following on from the huge success of the first picture book, I'm Sticking with You, this gorgeous rhyming sequel is the perfect continuation of a heartwarming story.

When the Velvet Underground were recording their fourth album, Loaded, their lineup was not fully intact. Combine that with the two voices and you've got a terrific opportunity for young readers to develop fluency, as two readers can read Bear's and Squirrel's lines. This is a great lesson to teach children that not only can we become friends of all kins, but our personalities can be so different yet we mesh so well. She began writing books of her own in 2012 and is now published in more than 30 languages worldwide.

think about it - wouldnt all the charm and velvety-undergroundness be ruined if you got, like, this amazingly talented singer instead! When I first bought the LP in ‘86 and listened to ISWY there was some kind of transcendent response. This is yet another picture book where one character claims partway through to need space from the other, is alone for all of five seconds, and then runs off to rejoin their companion, because they can't imagine life without them. Then there's the line about going into the stratosphere (relief, escape, transcendence) from the violence, from reality (soldiers fighting. It explores that sometimes it’s okay to be alone but often without a friend things can be too lonely. It is only when he wishes to be alone that he finds the time and space to realise that 'he' needs to produce a solution for this friendship to work because there really is no one quite like bear.

The illustrations of the two characters are amazing and the rhyming text make this such a great book for little ones. Bear and squirrel do everything together and sometimes it can be too much BUT it’s much better to do things together instead of alone. Last year, Rolling Stone asked Tucker about the times she sang lead for the group, beginning with the band’s self-titled third album.Whether things get rough or you’re angry or scared, down in the dumps, or need ideas… it seems there is nothing that Bear won’t do for Squirrel. The (absolutely gorgeous, stunning) illustrations go a long way in conveying some of Squirrel's discomfort in the face of Bear's enthusiasm. But we see that they both love each other, and that life just isn't the same when they are not together, and we see how much squirrel really appreciates this best friend. I am still waiting for a picture book where two very good friends can have boundaries, spend time apart, and still have a joyful relationship whenever they are together.

As great as the writing is, the colorful narrative of the illustrations are what make this book special. As the Velvet Underground moved from MGM to Atlantic, they re-recorded two of the songs on VU, "Ocean" and "I'm Sticking with You", for possible inclusion on Loaded. Candy Gourlay introduces Wild Song, her companion novel to Bone Talk, in which Luki and Samkad leave their home in the Philippines for America. In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. Electricity comes from other planets”, “Satellite’s gone way up to mars”, “Some people go into the stratosphere” it was a theme with Lou but universally it’s a poetic theme too and from Lou’s relationship with Delmore S through to his later lionisation by the absurdist playwright Vaclav Havel the more opaque poetic approach was one of Lou’s creative constants. The books are illustrated by the same artist who created the charming The Duck Who Didn’t Like Water.
