About this deal

Yet despite the moments of awkwardness, Jessica emerges with an understanding of her developing identity that far surpasses her peers. What’s beautiful about this book is that Jessica’s trademark independence and persistence emerge during one of the most trying times in the formation of a person’s identity: the beginning of junior high.

I'm envious of all the young girls who will get a chance to grow up with Jessica from the beginning, but I hope they fall in love with the series the way I did. A poor condition book can still make a good reading copy but is generally not collectible unless the item is very scarce. If she doesn't care about boys, she won't pretend to and she has trouble caring about her friends' woes over such things either. A debut entry in a tween series based on the best-selling Jessica Darling adult books finds Jessica preparing to start seventh grade by referring to her older sister's guidelines for guaranteed popularity before stumbling her way into the role of the school's seagull mascot.

And before you ask, yes, there's totally some Marcus Flutie in this book - I do feel like McCafferty may have been pulling a bit of a deus ex machina in how Jessica and Marcus interact in this book, but frankly. But readers meeting Jessica for the first time will be charmed by this authentic and funny girl who makes well-tread territory feel as new as a pair of first-day-of-school sneakers.

And maybe just maybe, some parents out there are Jessica Darling fans and have children that are old enough to be introduced to the series themselves. On April 24, 2006, Little, Brown issued a statement from Viswanathan in which the author admitted to reading McCafferty's novels but stated that any similarities between them and her own work were "completely unintentional and unconscious. overall, bullshit movie, had to bleach my eyes and have someone spit in them after watching this mean girls rip off terrible chick flick movie (i love chick flicks, but this was just appalling). The writing is simple, the humor is aimed for younger readers, and the characters are not very mature. And with Hope not being an "on-screen" character in the first two books, I still feel like it's a treat to have her as a character in the books.

The book was marketed as a "prequel" to the five earlier Jessica Darling books (such as Second Helpings), which took its young heroine through high school and college and was directed at teens. Those of us who are already well acquainted with Jessica will probably read this book waiting for certain people to show up, and by certain people I mean Marcus, but there is so much more to this book. Exchanging Valentines can be an awkward process, especially when you consider “Vinegar Valentines” and other snarky sentiments - whatever your tastes, enjoy the sweet and sour cards alike in this gallery! I really hope there are librarians, teachers and parents out there who are giving this to pre-teens – I think it will help a lot of young girls through middle school.
