About this deal

He is struggling internally with feeling threatened to stay part of a gang whose actions he doesn’t agree with. I really liked the illustrations from Ilyas’ comics included and would love to see full issues featuring his characters! Kick the Moon, is Muhammad Khan's explosive second novel, with original comic-book art from Amrit Birdi, bestselling illustrator of Username:Evie.

The entire cast of characters was just awful and continues to play into stereotypes without a slight bit of originality. Ilyas is about as real as it gets - the adolescent caught between boyhood and manhood, who knows what the right thing is but struggles to act, awkward, talented but withdrawn, sweet, trying to cling to his childhood passions, with emerging feelings for girls.

Using the idea that he’s a successful sports player, therefore do no wrong is such a common thing that happens in school. There were a few things that should have gotten more attention, the novel felt somewhat rushed but also at times a little too slow. The pair’s friendship is tested, though, when Kelly gets involved with Imran and her life comes crashing down in ruins when he exploits her.

When Ilyas gets put in detention, he comes across Kelly, a rich-kid outsider who turns out to be his kindred spirit. Sometimes the book can seem a little crowded, as it tries to tackle so many subjects: it takes us a good 100 pages before we meet Kelly properly, and the last third feels rushed.Ilyas finds his tribe, but not in a tribalistic sense - he finds those who are positive, supportive and who have the same verve for life that deep down he has always had. Sadly, the director just couldn't pull it all together in the end, and the tightly woven plot just seems to fall apart.
