About this deal

Unscrew the three T30 torx bolts holding the bonnet latch mechanism in place noting each bolt's position.

The mechanism was reasonably dirt and rust free for 7yo but I did find that the secondary latch "fish hook" wouldn't latch due to partial seizure of the pivots to this and the release lever shafts. Recently when you try to open my bonnet now, you have to really pull hard on the lever to open the bonnet (almost as if the cable will snap), it will extremely stiff and I didn't want the risk of the car failing the MOT because of it. You need to first remove the two holding the lock in place, these are located directly behind the VW badge. Whilst you hold this you will need to get someone else to pull the bonnet release lever and it should pop open (you might need to pull the guide pretty hard to react the cable tension). Disconnect bonnet release cable, I pulled it off the metal clips this gave me enough room, but I suspect the cable may be a bit stretched.

You should then get enough room to open the bonnet with the catch still attached to release it manually. The black clip will be in the vertical position when the bonnet is open and the silver springs will be in horizontal position. You will reveal two torx25 screws, remove these and then you'll be able to lever the bonnet enough to get at the third torx screw which is slightly to the left and hidden by the grille.

Also, the holes in the catch body, through which the three securing bolts pass, are threaded (not oversized as on VW original one) - this makes the catch fitment more stable in my opinion. The problem is rust forming within the latch mechanism - perhaps unavoidable considering it's position right at the very front of the car. Then went through the open/close process (wihtout actually closing the bonnet) many times (approx 20). Unfortunately the car battery is now flat and we cant get the bonnet opened to jump start it or replace it. To open the bonnet I need one person to press down on the bonnet above the latch while another person pulls the cable. However, please note that our tool is for reference only and we recommend that you check the part number on your old unit prior to purchasing. In theory you should be able to just pull the lead out of these clips but I found this a bit tricky and so instead, just pushed the clips off the bodywork with a screwdriver. I can get the handle off and can take the panel off to get at the cable but the dial/wheel seems to be attached to a box - do I need to replace this entire box?

With access to some of the best uprated products and OE equivalent standard parts be safe in the knowledge that you are receiving parts that are durable and that will last the course. There are two long ones holding the main part of the unit itself and a short one that holds the catch bar in place on the car. The bonnet is susceptible to all sorts of rubbish and liquids from the front of the car, so corrosion can build up.car front quater virtualy taken apart and still cannot get access to get replacment cabel through bulkheads, can just see 2 grommets that bend the cable through tight angles and did not want to pull too hard in case the line I tied to one end broke leaving me with nothing! So I guess I've displaced it from clips somewhere up behind the dashboard - Does anyone know if the cable is indeed clipped into place on its way to the engine area? The unit appears to be sealed together so it can't be dismantled, the only thing you can do is clean out the crap and regrease. However, the release springs seem stronger, so the bonnet really "pops" when you pull the release now!

First thing to say (and this is from retrospect, once I eventually got the catch off), it looks like, on my vehicle (Mk5 GT Tdi - 2004 model), there is an "emergency release" tag, sticking through the top slat of the grille, just on the driver's side of the VW badge. Just behind the drivers headlight, you will see one of those annoying fiddly VW electrical connectors (see elsewhere for release instructions for these) Once you have this disconnected the cable the catch body can be completely removed.

In the above examples you can see the casing, the hole which holds the ball for the release lever and the ball itself.
