With recipes for classics like Chestnut Stuffing, and Perfect Roast Potatoes you might think this is a nod to the Spirit of Christmas Past, but Nigella gives things her own unique twist with Pumpkin and Goat Cheese Lasagna, Fully Loaded Potato Skins, and Roast Squash and Sweet Potato Soup with Buttermilk-Blue Cheese Swirl. The flavours combined beautifully and the end result was a wonderful combination of textures - soft and fluffy cake with a slightly crispy top. A warning to sober folks: there's a LOT of booze in this cookbook, and I'm not even talking about the drinks section because it has plenty of mocktails for you. No, just about every last recipe in this book requires adding some sort of alcohol, so if you're one of those people who won't even cook with liquor, you're SOL (I know, there are substitutions, but what a pain in the ass, especially since Lawson doesn't provide alternatives - you have to be one of those people who already knows what to swap out for vodka or vermouth).Illustrated with 150 fabulous full-colour photographs by Lis Parsons (photographer of the bestselling NIGELLA EXPRESS), including method photos and lavish double-page 'spreads', Nigella Christmas is in a new, irresistible format. Almost all the recipes include hints on substitutions, and many contain anecdotes about the recipe’s origin or mistakes that Nigella has made. Whatever the opposite of the currently still fashionable genre, the misery memoir, might be, this is it: a comfort chronicle. In the middle of the book she has a huge Main Event section that deals only with the Christmas meal.It answers everyday cooking quandaries – from how to rustle up a meal for friends in moments to what to do about those black bananas – and since real cooking is so often about leftovers, Nigella makes “leftovers right”, by showing us how to morph one recipe into another, from ham hocks to peas soups and pastries, braised chicken to Chinatown salad. There is even a schedule on how she handles Christmas Eve and Day and also alternatives to the traditional turkey if you're looking for that. Helena Garcia’s Book of Gingerbread also features here, and is smile-inducingly represented by her Gingerbread Present Brownies and Gingerbread Eggnog Cocktail. Dust Jackets are not guaranteed and when still present, they will have various degrees of tear and damage. This was a simple, easy to prepare dessert to bring to a friends' house over the holidays and it went down a treat.

I have to admit, I didn't exactly follow Nigella's measurements exactly and came up with a drink that was probably too strong on the sour and even stronger on the amaretto, but I liked the sharp contrast of sweet and sour and will be making this again. As well as offering the reader an array of inspired new recipes – from clams with chorizo to Guinness gingerbread – Nigella rounds up her no-nonsense kitchen kit must-haves in the way of equipment and magical standby ingredients. But, let's face it, when the pressure to feed and entertain builds up, the festive season can begin to lose its sparkle… That's where Nigella comes in. Her Furby recipe is to die for, but her attempt to BBQ the cast of Friends leads to multiple lawsuits.

It's always nice to receive a nice jar of vanilla sugar or a chutney wrapped up beautifully as a gift.
