About this deal

Innovation specialist Berger takes on some big questions in this absorbing treatise that calls for more curiosity in our corporate development and daily lives.... Quirky sidebars on topics ranging from George Carlin to hard-boiled eggs add to the book’s inquisitive spirit.... This potential game-changer will help readers identify where opportunities lie and how to seize them.”

In The Book of Beautiful Questions, expert "questionologist" Warren Berger shares illuminating stories and compelling research on the power of inquiry. Drawing from the insights and expertise of psychologists, innovators, effective leaders, and some of the world's foremost creative thinkers, he presents the essential questions readers need to make the best choices when it truly counts, with a particular focus in four key areas: decision-making, creativity, leadership, and relationships. Why don't we ask enough questions? Why do we ask so many bad questions? And how can we ask the kinds of great questions that make us better at leading, deciding, connecting, and creating? This isn't just a thought-provoking book on questions--it's also full of instantly useful answers. ( Adam Grant, bestselling author of ORIGINALS, GIVE AND TAKE, and OPTION B with Sheryl Sandberg)

Reviews

From Warren Berger, the author of A More Beautiful Question, two dozen big questions -- and hundreds of small ones -- to guide readers through common problems with work, creativity, leadership, relationships, and the meaning of life.

Chapter 1 (focus on decision making) was weak. I have recently read or re-read most of the books he references, and in truth a lot of structure is lost in translation. Berger focuses on the questions that each of the authors he references ask, as part of their methodology... which is fiiine, but hardly the panacea he seems to believe it might be. The thing with this section is that most of the books he summarises are genuinely good and worth reading in their own right, and the way they are presented here is doing them a disservice.Start with intellectual humility - You don't know it all, and still need to ask questions, so do ask questions... Find out more about my 2014 book, A More Beautiful Question, which introduced the power of beautiful questions to the world. Seven years later, with sales now well over 100,000, it’s still going strong! It has a lot to do with the question we ask and how we ask the question--but , more importantly, the fact that we can change the question to be able to: This book is a lit review of other works, and your mileage will vary depending on which of these you've read.

Berger’s expanded mission is to ensure that our classrooms are fostering the essential skill of questioning so that questioning no longer falls off the educational cliff. A longtime business speaker, for the past six years Berger has also been traveling the world speaking about the importance of teaching children how to become better questioners, and in spring 2020 he published BEAUTIFUL QUESTIONS IN THE CLASSROOM (Corwin Press), aimed at educators everywhere. Cara Herman of Crush Republic sent in this question. Her point is that in trying to get people to respond to her agency’s research questions, it can be most effective to “have them respond naturally, without thinking (or) filtering their answers.” Which requires asking questions in a whole different way—thereby encouraging people to give more honest, organic responses. Thanks, Cara. And yes, I’m certain we can help each other on our respective quests to “master the art of asking questions.” “What would happen if teenagers believed they deeply mattered to the world around them?” BY THE SAME AUTHOR A More Beautiful Question: The Power of Inquiry to Spark Breakthrough Ideas CAD Monkeys, Dinosaur Babies and T-Shaped People: Inside the World of Design Thinking My better half and I were in Cusco, Peru trying to wrap our minds around the bewildering history of Incas. We had hired a guide, Simon, to assist with our travel around the country and answer our questions about such a fascinating time and place. We know that the art of asking questions is at the heart of discovery in science, philosophy, medicine—so why don’t we extend that power to all areas of our lives? The questions Warren Berger raises in A MORE BEAUTIFUL QUESTION are thoughtful, provocative, odd, serious, and silly, but in every case they are indeed the kind of ‘beautiful questions’ that can help us identify the right problems and generate creative solutions.” Drawn from the insights and expertise of psychologists, innovators, effective leaders, and some of the world’s foremost creative thinkers, Berger’s beautiful questions will guide readers to their own answers where it matters most. I heard Warren Berger talk on the Art of Manliness. I often say about my own practice as a therapist is that I don’t give good answers, but aim to ask good questions. I am forever trying to become more skilled in the questions I ask of people. When I heard Berger speak I thought he could provide something that develops my skill in this regard. be dividing us more than ever these days. And yet we continue to have a deep and powerful need to connect with others. A growing body of research shows that human connection is central to leading a happier, more meaningful life.13 Increasingly, we turn to technology as a means of generating more connections. But more is not necessarily deeper—and when it comes to life- enriching connections, deeper is better. In the effort to forge deeper, more meaningful human connections, one of the great, under-appreciated tools available is the low-tech question. On the most basic level, questions help us understand, and empathize with, other people. When you ask someone else a question, you are showing interest and providing an opportunity for that person to share thoughts, feelings, and stories. The better the question, the more it invites such sharing. When we’re close to people and know them well (a spouse, family members, a business partner, a lifelong friend), we tend not to ask them questions. A powerful change can occur in these relationships when we shift away from advising, criticizing, opining—and toward the direction of asking and listening. That shift to “asking mode” can even transform adversarial relationships—the kind that are tearing much of our society apart these days at town halls and holiday dinners. The challenge is to reach out with questions that open avenues for conversation, rather than provoke yelling. To quote the radio interviewer and expert questioner Krista Tippett: “It’s hard to transcend a combative question.14 But it’s hard to resist a generous question. We all have it in us to formulate questions that invite honesty, dignity, and revelation.” Because questioning is such an effective tool for connecting with others, the ability to question well should be seen as a critical leadership skill. But this raises a question that is much debated these days: Can a leader embrace uncertainty, ask questions, admit vulnerability—and still be seen as a strong and confident leader? This much is certain: The challenge of leading, in almost any area, is becoming more complex and demanding. In the past, being a leader meant you’d attained a certain level of expertise and authority in a field or within an organization. Thus, you were seen as the one who could confidently tell others what to do. But in a time of rapid change, the leader who claims to I have found several great books on questioning, and bestselling author Warren Berger's latest book, The Book of Beautiful Questions, is no exception . . . [I] recommend it to any small business owner wanting to expand their ability to inquire. ( Small Business Matter)
