About this deal

Eric Valentine's Electric Guitars — Queens Of The Stone Age In this episode, LA-based producer Eric Valentine (Queens Of The Stone Age, Slash) recreates the guitar sound from QOTSA's unique 2002 album, Songs for the Deaf. If you play in a function band, you’ll already know that a highly-versatile rig is necessary. To ensure that your covers sound convincing, closely capturing the guitar sounds from original recordings is essential for engaging your audience.

This Marshall amp was used for the first six Van Halen albums. There are many rumours and myths surrounding this amp and it’s famous “Brown sound”. The amp was bought second hand and imported to the US from England. UK amps run at 230v whereas US amps run at 110v. When he plugged it in for the first time, it was very quiet because of the voltage differences. Eddie fitted a variac transformer that allowed to him set the voltage entering the amp. He chose to set this around 140v and run the amp with all the dials set to 10. This allowed to him to get maximum volume but save the tubes from wear and tear. Choose your modifications from the drop-down menu then choose "New Pedal" to get the mod installed in a new pedal or "Your Pedal" to send us your pedal and we will install it. With so many strong frequencies flying around in a space, your tone can easily get buried amongst them. In this scenario, it can be easy to think that you just need to turn your amp up, but an EQ pedal is actually a far more effective (and potentially ear-saving!) solution. As a Boost The second main question is how many bands you need. For a parametric EQ, this is likely to be between one and three. For a graphic EQ, the number will typically be between 6 and 10 bands. These are spaced at frequencies that correspond to octaves above a fundamental.

Yes and no. Yes if you want more control over your signal. Often EQ pedals will have sliders rather than knobs and these can make it easier to visualise what your sound ‘looks’ like. You should also remember that amps will have EQ controls however they might be changing a broader range of frequencies and so an EQ pedal (Especially a 7-band or above) can help you hone in on those frequencies. Controls: Footswitch toggles Effect On/Bypass Six paragraphic slider controls enable boost or attenuation up to plus or minus 18db at frequency centers 100Hz, 200Hz, 400Hz, 800Hz, 1.6kHz and 3.2kHz For me it gives me the extra EQ points that most amps don’t so I can set it for the best sound live. The Zenith combines a boost, EQ and compression into a full-featured preamp option. The boost has up to 20dB of transparent gain on tap, but the EQ is a bit more subtle. The amp-like 3-band EQ controls are active, but have a relatively restrained boost and cut range. The middle control has additional controls to help it gel with other pedals. There's a three-way switch for Q, and a frequency selector that spans from low mids (500Hz) to more conventional mid frequencies (800Hz and 1.2kHz). The Eventide H9 is an all-encompassing multi-effects unit that features EQ algorithms/patches, which can be controlled via an expression pedal too. With the ability to assign the expression pedal to any parameter, the super-modern H9 is a very impressive unit. But if you want a cheaper alternative to the H9, Line 6’s M5 is a solid choice, costing a fraction of the price yet boasting similar functionality. Tbh seems to have the same as the boss bar the tuner……..but a cool choice as it is smaller than the boss

We look at every link in the chain from tuning and guitar choice through to amp settings, pedals, mic selection and post-processing. An EQ pedal with sliders is known as a ‘graphic’ EQ, and they can vary from between 5-band (5 sliders) to super-precise 10-band models. Boss’ infamous 7-band GE-7 Graphic Equalizer stompbox is a popular choice, striking the perfect balance between simple and sophisticated. Apart from lo-fi, you can also attain synth-like filter sweep sounds with an EQ pedal. An effect used often in electronic music, a filter sweep is generally used for marking the transition between verse and chorus sections.

The MXR is the perfect boost. It tightens the tone, and adds gain but without congesting and compressing the tone like a overdrive can. It's my fav boost. I still use my Maxon od808, Boss sd-1, and even my metal zone for that purpose, but the MXR 6 band is the best of the bunch and gets the most use from me. The 10 band is also really good, but doesn't sound quite as tight as the 6 band, which is just more focused in it's tone.

This usually means taking several guitars to a gig, as well as a couple of amplifiers for producing various tonalities. However, as modern players seek ways to make their rigs more portable and manageable, an EQ pedal can be a great solution for minimising your setup.
