About this deal

More's the pity that the previous versions of the Realforce boards had a non-standard bottom row. Now that the R2 has a standard bottom row, my old Topre keycap sets do not fit. Nevertheless, the overall scheme looks fine to me.

Both the RF/Topre R2 and the Leopold R2 suffer from some stabilizer rattle in the other wide keys. Fortunately, the only wide keys I use frequently other than the spacebar are the Right Shift and Return/Enter keys. I notice the rattle mostly form the Right Shift. This is an interesting contrast with my Northgate Omnikey 101 keyboard with SKCM white Alps switches. The Northgate has wire stabilizers on all the wide keys and they do not rattle. For those who prefer quiet keying, you can dramatically reduce typing sound with Topre silent keyboards. The keyboard does have a few routing channels at the bottom, so if you want to route the cable more cleanly that is an option. The tactile bump is bit more pronounced than a Cherry MX Brown which I enjoyed, but the bottom-out and sound it produces is not for me. The Stabilizers

The electro-capacitive switch produces a more satsifying noise and a slightly less pronounced tactile bump. I’ve never felt like I could type faster than with this switch.

The APC models come with moulded key spacer inserts for main alphanumeric cluster of keys that reduce the travel of the switches to 2mm and 3mm. For this reason, they also come with a keycap puller. Topre has also replaced their folded steel "tweezer" keycap puller with a more common wire loop design. The key spacer inserts are also sold separately, and include moulded sets for the alphanumeric cluster and WASD keys, and 10 individual spacers that can be used on any single-unit keycaps. APC models also have 4 additional keys in the top-right corner, similar to the Realforce RGB. These keys have the same function as they do on the Realforce RGB: 'Mute', 'Volume Up', 'Volume Down', and 'APC'. The 'APC' key switches between the three adjustable actuation points (1.5, 2.2, or 3.0mm). Keyboard utilises "silenced" switches. Dampening is achieved using a foam & plastic washer between the slider's base plate and the switch housing's ceiling. This is a heavy puppy at 2.98 pounds, topping even the 2.92-pound Corsair K95 RGB Platinum, which features more media controls, macro keys, and a wrist rest. However, that’s the only way it stands out. Until it’s plugged in, the Realforce R2 RGB is strikingly ordinary. The Epomaker NiZ Plum Atom 68, still comes with an electro-capacitive switch design, similar to Topre, but at a much more affordable price point. In August, 2012, Topre announced that they would be ceasing production and sale of a number of full size keyboards, including the Realforce 106, 101, 103U and 103UB as they have been largely superseded by the 104U, 104UB and 108U keyboards [4]. I am using 87U and I have tried R2 PFU limited edition (TKL version), so this is a short personal comparison between the TKL models, but should be the same for full size models. So these are the differences that I have noticed myself: Per-key customization of actuation distance is undeniably a unique feature that your typical gaming keyboards don’t offer (unless you try swapping individual keyswitches, which isn’t impossible). But, it’s pretty much the only standout feature. Overall, compared to other mechanical gaming keyboards, the gaming performance of the Realforce R2 RGB doesn’t manage to excel in any tangible way. Purchasing Guide

This makes each keystroke feel rattily and bit unstable. I have difficulty understanding why Topre skipped out on installing stabilizers on these keys, as they impact the typing experience tremendously. The build quality aside, I found the keyboard to be underwhelming, especially considering the steep price point. Although subtle, Topre use two font sizes for their printed legends. The smaller size was used on some of their older keyboards and keyboards that have two language character sets (e.g. English + Hiragana or English + Hangul). The easiest way to tell is to observe the distance between the top of the keycap and the top of the printed legend. The larger font will be much closer to the top edge of the keycap than the small font. I was disappointed to find some imperfections on the keycaps, such as a warped shape, inaccurate spacing between keys, and peeling plastic.

While the design of the keyboard is not quite as sophisticated at the Realforce R2, it still comes with PBT keycaps and fixes a lot of the issues. Contoured key settings allows your hands and wrists to type in a natural position, reducing hand and finger fatigue. The keyboard itself feels outdated in a lot ways. Extremely high price point, a non-detachable power cable, and poor stabilizers make this keyboard not satisfying and very clunky to move around.

While I found the Topre switches to be fun and novel to use, they feel similar to Cherry MX Silent switch, but make a high-pitched noise on the upstroke – not my cup of tea.Keycaps can be removed easily with most standard keycap pullers with perhaps the only exception being some plastic ring-pull varieties which can be difficult to attach to the keycap. Some Realforce keyboards come with a Topre keycap puller which is not particularly ideal for larger cap removal and should be used with caution as it has been known to slip off and scratch the keycap during removal attempts. Home row indicators on the ‘F’ and ‘J’ keys are the homing bar design. At the Tokyo Game Show, held in September, 2017, Topre revealed a new line of Realforce keyboards [6]. Dubbed the 'Realforce R2', the new keyboards borrow features from the previously released Realforce RGB, including the case and PCB design, and on some R2 models, the APC (Actuation Point Changer) feature. The initial announcement comprised of 8 Japanese-layout models. The 2 standard and 2 standard + silenced models were released in October and November respectively. The 4 APC models were released in December, 2017.
