About this deal

The most valuable insights I gained from this book are what she herself expressed as the two biggest surprises she encountered: Going into this book, I thought it'd be all about how awesome it is to be a man. Vincent makes it clear early on that this would not be the case, which was a surprise to her as well. A tomboy in childhood and a lesbian, she writes: Although a few of Vincent's realizations are meaningful—like that some men may feel just as oppressed by patriarchal ideas about gender roles as the women they are supposed to be oppressing—most of her revelations amount to something like "Not all men are complete pigs all the time, and some of them even have feelings!" While I thought the book was an interesting social experiment, it wasn't meaningful to me. It's clear to me that Vincent's ultimate conclusions likely would have been closer to the starting point for many of the women I know. Norah Vincent made it happen, with the idea of studying men among their own, their interaction with females and both sexes' place in society. What I personally expected: sociological insights, remarkable - and worrisome - stories, eye openers and a good dash of amusement. I rarely enjoyed and never felt in any way fulfilled personally by being perceived and treated as a man... On the contrary, I identify deeply with both my femaleness and my femininity, such as it is, more so after [my alter ego], in fact, than ever before." Norah Mary Vincent (September 20, 1968 – July 6, 2022) was an American writer. She was a weekly columnist for the Los Angeles Times and a quarterly columnist on politics and culture for the national gay and lesbian news magazine The Advocate. She was a columnist for The Village Voice and Salon.com. Her writing appeared in The New Republic, The New York Times, [1] New York Post, The Washington Post and other periodicals. [2] She gained particular attention in 2006 for her book Self-Made Man, detailing her experiences when she lived as a man for eighteen months.

She did her thing-which was more willowy and soft, more like a young hippie guy who couldn't really grow much of a beard-and we went out like that for a few hours. While the side effects of Vincent's experiment are fascinating (including what happens when she reveals herself to be female and the negative impact on her psyche), it is her field reporting from Planet Guy that holds the most novelty. Self-Made Man will make many women think twice about coveting male "privilege" and make any man feel grateful that his gender burden is better understood. For me, the bowling episode illustrated the fault lines in class more than gender. Vincent is fully unaware. She compares the men's mix of coaching and competitiveness to that her peers at a tennis camp. The men's retreat was interesting in that I haven't read much about these and that they rarely appear in the media.
