About this deal

So, not only did Jamie read out all the messages sent by those who couldn’t make it – something that surely should have been my responsibility – but I wasn’t here. Did anyone even notice my absence? In the spirit of Colleen Hoover , a heartbreaking, nostalgic story of three childhood friends, each caught in the crossfire of an all-consuming teenaged love triangle, and their homecoming years later as adults that will reveal everything.

Thank you Simon and Schuster and Netgalley for the preview of Paige Toons new book. As a huge fan Paige's work I was so excited when I saw I had been approved for this one ... not going to lie, I was a tad disappointed when I realised it was just a chapter preview .. I must have missed that in my excitement of seeing it and requesting it ... although something is better than nothing so I am not complaining at all!! Leah is a favourite of mine with how she has coped through all of it and is a brilliant role model for her daughter Emilie. She sums her life up perfectly when she realises if life had turned out differently she would never have had Emilie in her life. The one thing she would not change, the one thing she would never class as a mistake. She earns a special place with me for this. I've read and enjoyed a couple of Paige Toon novels in the past, and this one definitely left me wanting to read more of her work in the future, so much so that I've already sourced copies of The Minute I Saw You, Johnny Be Good and Pictures of Lily. I look forward to reading them and possibly reviewing them here on the blog. As I said in the opening paragraph, Someone I Used to Know is beautiful and heartbreaking but, ultimately, uplifting story. Gorgeous, brimming with heart, this is Paige Toon at her best. Beautiful and accomplished... A class act' MILLY JOHNSON The relationship between Leah and George felt so special throughout this book, and reduced me to tears many, many times while reading. The journeys they both experienced felt all the more important as the book came to an ending, as we got to experience the pair at two different points in their lives: childhood and adulthood, while also finding out information along the way that filled the gaps between these two times (another thing done beautifully!), so it really felt as though I knew the ins and outs of these characters by the time I’d finished.Every time I see Paige Toon is releasing a new book I literally Squeal with excitement! I have been reading her books since the very beginning .. well since Lucy in the sky ... and I have loved every single book she has released since! This is a heartbreaking read in many ways, and one that highlights the sheer importance of what people like Leah's parents do. Fostering isn't easy, and neither is being a foster kid, and author Paige Toon does not shy away from showing this to the reader. I also loved that the family home also just happened to be an alpaca farm and some of the mentions of the alpacas. Some of the family traditions, such as the tree, warmed my heart, while other things, like the bit about the wrist warmers most definitely made me giggle. The story focuses around Leah the daughter of parents who foster time after time. The main timings in the book are now and then with some in-between and a little after now. Unlike some books that jump a little this one flows well and adds to the mystery and depth of the story. This book is much more than meets the eye. A pretty cover with so much depth. The stories main focus is around the care system how lives are affected positively and negatively by their upbringings.

Every single character offered importance to the story at one point or another, in my opinion, and that was something that I felt was really special about this book - each crucial character had their own personality and we’re beautifully written. I absolutely adored Leah, George and Theo as a trio throughout the ‘Then’ chapters! What a perfect emotive journey! I could feel every character so brilliantly, the writing was beyond immersive… I really never wanted this to end!’ LOUISE PENTLAND George is a teenager, who is fostered by Leah’s parents. Previously the only person he has relied on is himself, he is angry and has dealt with more in his life than any one should. I loved this from start to finish! I loved the characters, the alternating of chapters between the then and now and most importantly I loved the alpaca’s! Can I persuade the husband to let me have one in the garden! 🤔😂 me thinks not but a girl can dream! A beautiful story about love and family and healing broken hearts. It swept me up and wouldn’t let me go – I loved it’ BETH O’LEARY

Publication Order of One Perfect Books

Paige Toon perfectly tells the story that families are made up of all different people and circumstances. Being related to someone by blood doesn’t make them family. Being there for someone selflessly is what makes you family. Danielle, Jamie, and many of the other twenty-and thirty-somethings here tonight were fostered by my parents at some point in their lives. I left home for university in London when I was eighteen and made the city my home, so there are people here that I hadn’t met before today. Others are more familiar to me, like Shauna, who was with us for two years and who still lives locally. Theo’s wealthy family have mysteriously pulled him out of boarding school and he’s now enrolled with Leah and George. When their worlds collide that summer, George, Leah and Theo form a bond they believe will be unbreakable. But life doesn’t always go to plan... Cup of Yorkshire Tea and a biscuit. I write from our retired campervan at the bottom of the garden and every time I leave the house to traipse down there with my tray, my little dog shadows me – so now I bring a chew treat for her too! Do you have any book recommendations for our readers? Narrated from the perspective of the lovely, likeable Leah, and set over dual timelines, it flows seamlessly between alternating chapters of ‘then’ and ‘now’. Featuring wonderful, well-crafted, relatable main characters, and a stellar supporting cast.

Her stories are so immersive, relatable and easy to connect with and she never fails to bring out so much emotion as if you are right there in the moment with her engaging characters.⁣ An absolute tearjerker full of love for the family we’re born into and the one we build along the way.
