Dan Chiasson, in the New Yorker, wrote that "[ Citizen] is an especially vital book for this moment in time. ...The realization at the end of this book sits heavily upon the heart: 'This is how you are a citizen,' Rankine writes. 'Come on. Let it go. Move on.' As Rankine's brilliant, disabusing work, always aware of its ironies, reminds us, 'moving on' is not synonymous with 'leaving behind.'" [17]

With all the resources and ingenuity at our dispoal, we humans can solve our problems. But we don't. Why not ? And what can you and I do about it ? Whether you've never left home, are studying at university, looking to live and move abroad, or simply eager to explore your own identity within a global society, You Are A Global Citizen will help you understand how the outside world impacts what's going on inside your mind, and vice versa. O'Brien, Sean (2015-07-16). "Citizen: An American Lyric by Claudia Rankine, book review: Grimly". The Independent . Retrieved 2022-01-28. David Grayson, Emeritus Professor of Corporate Responsibility at Cranfield University School of Management and co-author of The Sustainable Business Handbook

Citizens opens up a new way of understanding ourselves and shows us what we must do to survive and thrive – as individuals, as organisations, as nations, even as a species. You Are A Global Citizen challenges us to take a deeper look at our role as global citizens, from the armchair traveller to the frequent flyer and everyone in between, providing a springboard for us to understand the world and other cultures by first understanding ourselves. His lively book – which has become something of an underground hit – highlights new forms of active citizenship.' Our staff have the right to do their jobs without being treated badly - find out how we deal with unacceptable behaviour.

Victor Hugo said that there is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come. Recognising and acting on our power as Citizens is an idea whose time has surely arrived. Democracy and the institutions of power are broken. And, as the book’s subtitle says, the key to fixing everything is all of us. That’s a great line. Jon and I share a past in advertising, so I appreciate the craft required to load so much meaning into just a few words. Lately it seems every time I turn on the news I come across a story that reminds me of this collection. The further I get from it, the more it grows within me. Rankine argues with teeth for a world where we can look bigotry in the face and pulverize it. A world where cops don't shoot unarmed citizens, regardless of race or creed. A world into which we can be proud to have birthed new lives. Citizen: An American Lyric is fiercely important to us all, not limiting to race, gender, nationality, etc, et al. I hope Rankines message is taken to heart.Farmer, Jonathan (2014-10-09). "The Genius Poet Whose New Book Makes Race Ferociously Real". Slate Magazine . Retrieved 2022-01-28. It is an inspiring idea... the text of this book should be taught in every civics class everywhere'. Jon is working with a set of ideas and tools that have the potential to change politics forever. In fact, they could change everything forever.'I've never been more convinced he has one of the few big ideas that's easily applied, fundamentally needed and genuinely offers a chance of change. Get on board for his new work, now. I am.' There is such a thing as an idea whose time has come. This is that idea.' – James Perry, Board Member, B Lab Global, and Founding Partner, Snowball Investment Management She relates how it feels to be judged and hated because of the colour of her skin. To not even feel her body belongs to her because it is always up for judgment and criticism. As she says, "The worst injury is feeling you don’t belong so much to you"

There are a few parts of England we don’t cover yet. If you’re in one of these areas, we’ll give you other options when you call. Morrison, Toni (2015-04-20). "Awards: L.A. Times; Minnesota Book". Citizens is a powerful and intriguing contribution to the search for a genuinely sustainable future. I am particularly interested in how the Citizen Story might help businesses to engage more fully with their employees and customers to accelerate sustainability and might also help businesses to become more transparent and accountable.' – David Grayson, Emeritus Professor of Corporate Responsibility at Cranfield University School of Management and co-author of The Sustainable Business Handbook Citizens is so exciting and full of energy from the beginning that I wanted to read the whole thing immediately. A wonderful guide to how to be human in the 21st Century.' The hoodie on the cover is empty. Claudia Rankine fills it with experiences. The experiences of Americans whose color has rendered them invisible to the many who are privileged enough to be blind. We constantly hear and tell stories about who we are and our capacity to act. "Leaders" may tell us they can save us from all manner of problems, if we clear their path to power. Their story is that we should live as subjects - cogs in their machine. Or they tell us that our narrow self interest will make things work out via the magic of the marketplace. Their story is that we should live as consumers - liberated - yes, liberated to be cogs in another machine whose ownership we are all a bit vague about. Aren't these people dreadful to fill our heads with these stories of how our lives should be lived ! But wait, we tell ourselves the same stories, we tell them to each other. We are complicit. The stories are all pervasive. The belief that every single one of us has both the potential and the desire to make the world better drives me every day, in everything I do. In Citizens, Jon shows how taking that belief as a starting point really could transform our world. This is a truly powerful book, in every sense of the word.' - Josh Babarinde, Forbes 30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneur
