About this deal

Tanganyika and Zanzibar have come under Portuguese, German and British control since the 16th century. In 1961, Tanganyika became independent, followed by Zanzibar in 1963. In 1964, the Sultanate of Zanzibar was overthrown and the two states merged to create Tanzania.

The country’s coat of arms consists of a man and a woman supporting a warrior shield. The warrior shield is divided into four sections. The first section includes a burning torch (represents knowledge and enlightenment). The second section consists of the flag of the country, the third section is an ax and a hoe representing agriculture, while the fourth section contains wavy bands of blue and white representing the land and sea. The phrase “Uhuru na Umoja” appear at the bottom of the shield.

There are also important symbols on the coat of arms, including a burning torch. This is seen on the golden part of the shield and signifies freedom, enlightenment, and knowledge. It is in northern Tanzania, around Arusha, where you can see Maasai culture and traditions alive. The Maasai huts are called ' manyatta' and are built with wood, cow dung, mud. Several huts belong to a boma, which is a small community. People in these huts live without electricity, gas or piped water. Desperate shrew ( Crocidura desperate): This endemic mammal lives in Tanzania’s tropical forest areas. It is a small animal with a long, pointed snout and dark-colored fur. There are desperate shrews in Uzungwe National Park. The current official currency of Tanzania is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS/TSh). It is sub-divided into 100 senti. The currency is issued and distributed by the Bank of Tanzania (Benki kuu ya Tanzania), which is its central bank.
