Irish music can also be heard at The Steamer Inn, Shanklin, The Spyglass, Ventnor and Monkton Arts Centre in Ryde. An Irish music session at The Porter Club We have a monthly quiz night on the second Friday in the month, evenings with live music and events at Halloween, Christmas and New Year and we host barbeques in the summer and some charity events for Macmillan and Antony Nolan bone marrow register.

Stanley Cotton, a native of Whitwell, reads tales from WH Long’s Dictionary of the Isle of Wight Dialect and a rhyme from Percy Stone’s ‘Songs of the Soil’. Visit a traditional pub and warm up by the log fire whilst listening to the sounds of a local acoustic musician. Our biggest regular event is the Village Fare. This is on the first Saturday of every month and is organised by a team of people in the village. We have homemade cakes that are donated, tea and fresh coffee and a stall for selling local produce such as honey eggs, plants, flowers, and preserves and is often themed around Christmas and any special events. The group who organise this sometimes donate takings to the CGCA (we are registered as a charity) or to good causes such as the food bank.Formed to research, document and share information about the history of Ryde, its development, people, businesses and entertainments. The Island has a multitude of groups and societies whose members give many hours of their time for the benefit of their local communities. They have been formed by people with an interest in a wide range of subjects which deserve individual attention. Folk on Wight hold a regular monthly Folk Night on the last Thursday in the month, 7-11pm open to everybody.

The Yarmouth Sea Songs and Shanties Festival runs from Friday 26th to Monday 29th this year, giving us an extra day of amazing music. And it is still donations only! An early photograph of morris dancers at Niton turned up on Facebook recently. The photograph was almost certainly taken in June 1926 at a Women’s Institute rally. More information about this photograph can be found in the Island Folk History section. Quay Folk Club at Quay Arts Centre, Newport, has a special guest night on Sunday 25th. The guest is Miranda Sykes, with support from Shtum. This is not a night to miss! Music starts at 7pm as usual, in the upstairs theatre.

The Village Hall and the Gallybagger will be open all week serving tea cakes and drinks and there will be opening and closing events on the Saturday and Friday evenings. On Friday May 5th and Monday 15th, Bob’s Basement Band are offering a set of Polish tunes at the Painters Arms, Cowes, followed by an Irish playalong session. Finally, live folk is able to start up again. The Travellers Joy Folk Club is in full swing fortnightly on Thursday afternoons. Their first performance resulted in a splash by the County Press, valuable publicity for the Island’s folk scene. Evenings in a marquee at the Waverley have started up. Folk at the Porter Club is planned to re-start on 10th June, with a possible earlier date at the end of May. Exciting news is expected soon about the Chillerton Folk Night, too.
