Come search our bookshelves. If you don’t find it there, post a description on our UNSOLVED message board. And who we choose to spend it with. All the friendship we find that finds us in turn. Or the people who become compasses during the storm. It’s a deeply rich character driven story. With a fantastic asexual side character and featuring a queer romance story line as well, If Tomorrow Doesn’t Come explores acceptance. People who can accept us and our questions, our messy nights of feelings, and our mistakes.

It examines the ways Cass feels like she’s failing. How getting used to college and feeling so alone and out of place is terrifying and difficult. Our worlds can get bigger and feel smaller. If Tomorrow Doesn’t Come is a story I want to thrust into the hands of incoming college freshman. Of teens who are struggling to find moments of acceptance. It’s an emotional tour de force celebrating hope and love in the face of uncertainty. Avery loves Cass without needing to own her, and most of the time without wanting anything from her besides her friendship. She studies her when they’re together, and falls in love with every detail. Love can’t save Avery, or Cass, or the world. But it does make her feel terribly alive. They Both Die at the End meets All That's Left in the World - a heartbreaking and gripping first love story about courage, hope and holding onto love. Perfect for anyone looking for a big emotional romance of a read. The romance side was… fine. I didn’t particularly care about Cass or Avery as characters, and I felt that there was a lot of telling rather than showing when it came to their pining. I appreciated that they began as friends, and there was a rich love between them that would only get richer, but I felt like there wasn’t a lot of fleshing out either relationship to begin with, so we just know that they are friends, but we don’t know why. Young adult” is such a strange signifier. When I was in that age group, I read books without considering if they were “adult” or not. I think this genre can speak to a cross-demographic of readers (and I could make a good case that Catcher in the Rye is the quintessential YA book). What do you feel you can do in this genre that you can’t elsewhere?Avery is on the brink of ending her own life when she gets news from her best friend, Cass, that a catastrophic event is striking the planet. Only days are left for everyone on Earth. The book is split between past and present, smoothly transitioning and building to the inevitable end. Avery is a star in every way in High School but struggles when she reaches college. The author shows the little ways that Avery begins to lose control over her life and how she falls into a tunnel vision where she sees only her failings. Incredibly painful to read but necessary. It was hard! I had more than one meltdown over it, if I’m being honest. I’m sure it was hard for my agent, too, to be working on it then. It made me think that the book wouldn’t ever sell, because suddenly we lived in a world where it hit way too close to home and it was just too painful to sit in. But a few years later, I think people are ready for some catharsis, for a story like this where a global event (an asteroid, not a pandemic) threatens human life. I feel completely convinced the story is where and when it was always meant to be, and therefore so, so ready to open my hands and let it go into the world. On the morning Avery Byrne plans to end her life, the world discovers there are only nine days left to live: an asteroid is headed for Earth, and no one can stop it. Willkommensgutschein zur Erstanmeldung (gilt nicht für preisgebundene Ware) Rechtliche Hinweise Rechtliche Hinweise If Tomorrow Doesn't Come is definitely a heartfelt YA that aptly covers thematic grounds of mental health awareness, queerness, religion and most of all, the strength you gain from the love around you. My favourite part would be all the interactions Avery has with her parents, her brother and his family and the friends she makes in the few days. Amidst the chaos of the world ending, it was touching to see them all care for each other and form that close knit group of people she could rely on. Do look at the content warnings before diving into the book!
