Clear and simple settings mean you're always in control. You can easily disable the camera and microphone, and video calls are always encrypted. Meta Portal is designed to not just be great for video calling, but also to keep things interesting in other ways. For example, there are familiar apps built into the devices to keep you entertained. These include things like Spotify, Deezer, Words with Friends and Draw Something. Easily video call friends and family on smartphones or tablets using Messenger or WhatsApp.* Add up to seven people to a group call with Messenger, or three with WhatsApp. The sound quality is excellent, providing clear and crisp audio during calls. The built-in speakers deliver impressive volume and bass, enhancing the overall video calling experience. I found it perfect for catching up with friends and family, even in noisy environments. As you'd expect from a smart display, all the Portal devices are also controllable with your voice.

Meanwhile, the Story Time function enables Little Red Riding Hood and other fairy tales to be read on-screen, with the addition of music, animations and in some cases, filters that make you the center of the action. As the smallest smart display, it probably most closely resembles the digital photo frames it was inspired by, though with far more features.

You can have up to five profiles linked to your Portal. These accounts can be Facebook, WhatsApp or Workplace accounts. Let me start off by saying if you are not a Facebook user than this may not be the device for you. It's for voice and video chatting with family and friends on Facebook or WhatsApp. It has other apps like Facebook Watch and live [Updated, Live is no longer available]. It has Zoom, Bluejeans, Work live and other work services that are not full services. You can't type in the chat. [Update you can use chat features.]

We’re also introducing Portal for Business , a new service for SMBs to leverage Portal’s video calling and collaboration tools by easily deploying and managing Portal devices. With Portal for Business, SMBs will be able to create and manage Facebook Work Accounts for their teams. I love the FB Portal because it's cheaper than a laptop and I just wanted something to do the bare minimal and I didn't want a tablet either. Using Facebook is a bonus because a lot of my family and friends use messenger or messenger rooms. Love the camera when it follows you or zoom in on others in the room. We did find the 131-degree field of view gave a slight fish-eye effect to the footage, but it wasn’t enough to detract from the video call. Portal for Business is currently in closed beta in the US.
