About this deal

We have been asked by many customers to supply a larger handle for the MAG4 reels, with a Rugby ball shaped handle knob We’ve also noticed that those clever engineers at Penn have made an unseen and, as far as we know, an unpublicised adjustment to the free spool lever. On the previous series 3’s, the top of the free spool lever at both extremes of movement would touch the metal surround, running around the rim of the side-plate marking the metal and eventually taking the chrome off. On the new 525Mag4’s, there is an increased gap between the lowest point of the free spool toggle and the chrome rim. No more marking! Well done, Penn! The reel frame is made from lightweight graphite but is very strong and shows no distortion under heavy load. Being graphite, the inevitable small scratches will appear and turn a lighter grey than the main frame, but metal side-plates would scratch just as easily, so this takes nothing away from the reel.

We use this reel for heavy-duty fishing and have caught conger over 30lbs from the shore in heavy rough and had to put full pressure on the fish to keep them from snags. Only stainless gearing gives you the complete confidence to do this. The handle knob on these handles are rugby ball shaped and a lot larger and stronger than the standard handles. A direct swap using the original fitments! No additional parts are necessary! The 525 Supermag also has 6 bearings, of which the 2 inner spool bearings are upgraded to ABEC 5. Starts life as a 525 MAG. It has 6 magnets (4 standard + 2 extra). The 2 extra sit behind the magnet carrier in either positions 1 and 4 or 2 and 3. Thesy are held on by magnetic force. Gold anodized spool. There is also a wee bit of jiggery pokery going on - and hey presto - Supermag! Only the two inboard bearings in the spool affect spool rotational speed. While the shaft itself rotates in a pair of bearings, these bearings do NOT effect spool speed, only coming into play when the spool is under load, ie retrieving a fish.Position one is 74mm from the centre of the handle knob to the centre of the handle bushing, the attachment point

Each of these three-piece hybrid rods (styled Medium, Medium/Heavy and Heavy) is 4.27 metres (14ft) long and designed to be used with a Penn 515 Mag4 reel for ultimate casting performance. With these rods being hybrids, anglers can actually use either a fixed spool or multiplier reel with all three of the rods.A tip we would pass on is when replacing the side-plate screws, add some of grease or light oil, and this will maintain the screw threads and stop any chance of the screws corroding in their brass inserts through electrolysis. Like the Mag 3, the Mag 4 has stainless steel main and pinion gears. Penn doesn’t specify exactly what type of stainless steel has been used (not all stainless steel gears are created equal – read more about the properties and varieties of stainless steel gears here – https://www.sportfishingmag.com/fishing-reel-gears-explained-0/ ) but the fact that Penn has added extra support to the ‘uprated’ graphite cage should hopefully mean that the structure is sound enough to function harmoniously. It certainly feels smooth and not at all grindy in use. The standard handle is 50mm long, from the centre of the handle knob to the handle bushing, the attachment point
