About this deal

All the while, Elvis continued his relationship with his previous girlfriend, Anita Wood (Priscilla wrote that she discovered Anita had been at Graceland and staying in Elvis' room the day before her first visit). Sofia Coppola is a personal filmmaker whose work follows a thematic through line: her pictures are all, in one way or another, about captivity and isolation. For the characters held captive the cage is often a gilded one, and the cage in search of a bird (in Kafka’s phrase) in “Priscilla” is Elvis Presley. Priscilla writes that it was years later before she realized his tactics were part of a need to control her. This pattern began, before they were married, but in her 2005 made-for-television documentary, titled Elvis by the Presleys, she admitted that during their marriage, he had affairs with other women.

She wrote that after Elvis' affair with his "Viva Las Vegas" costar Ann-Margaret, she discovered notes and cards from another woman that suggested that Elvis was cheating on her again. The couple officially divorced in 1973, but they continued to co-parent their daughter, Lisa Marie. “We never lost our friendship and our care for each other,” Priscilla told Sunday Night. “He would call me at night. I really valued his calls. I valued him telling me what was wrong.” Did Priscilla Presley encourage Elvis to go to rehab before his death?

This was a difficult read in how it explores the details of how Elvis groomed and manipulated a young child (actively being failed by her parents) into marrying him. Even more difficult is the denial Priscilla lived in at the time of writing this memoir 38 years ago. I was fortunate to have experienced this book on audio, delightfully read by Priscilla Presley herself. This was a real treat. I don't think I could have enjoyed an audio version if she hadn't given it the personal touch and authenticity by reading it herself. She genuinely laughed recounting many stories, and transformed her voice when narrating dialogue from other characters in Elvis's circle (her experience as an actress helped here, I imagine). The tuxedo, along with Priscilla’s heavily beaded but modest gown, are part of the Bendigo exhibition, along with her veil and tiara. Priscilla Presley was the greatest love of Elvis' adult life and this book clearly conveys many reasons to justify Elvis' love. Her words are heartfelt, sincere, and as "objective" as one could "hope for" under the circumstances.

The version of Priscilla Presley who lingers in pop culture—dark eyeliner, teased hair, immaculate gowns—is the primary one we see in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, played by Olivia DeJonge and seen primarily as a witness to the central drama between Elvis and Colonel Tom Parker. The bulk of their relationship took place in the 1960s, a period skimmed over by a montage. Broox Sledge of the Enterprise-Journal wrote that, "If Elvis is your idol, perhaps you would be happier not reading Elvis and Me [...] Priscilla has taken her late husband and presented him to the world, warts and all. Some of the warts are attractive. Some are splotchy." [6] In her review of the book for the Tallahassee Democrat, Dannye Romine discussed the concept of Peter Pan syndrome, opining that, " Peter Pan Presley was clearly an emotionally impetuous man-child who never grew up and Priscilla was oh-such-an adoring Wendy who never encouraged him to grow up." [7] Influence [ edit ]

Priscilla reads this memoir to us herself, and that makes it much more fun to hear. As we age our faces and our bodies change a lot, but our speaking voices change very little. Remembering some of the silly moments from that time, the author lets out a brief, girlish giggle, and it’s almost impossible to believe that she is now a grandmother. Priscilla grew up in a strict but loving household. Her stepfather, the only father she knew, since her own died when she was an infant, was a military man, and so the family moved often. It was while they were stationed in Germany that one of Elvis’s employees saw Priscilla and invited her to meet with Elvis, who was doing his own tour of duty.Elvis’s blatant manipulation… lord, girl, RUN “He was truly a master at manipulating people.” If that isn’t cringe, I don’t know what is. When she first arrived at Graceland, one of Elvis’s favourite dates was late-night private screenings of new release films at the local cinema, with the assistance of a devoted long-serving projectionist. I will say, I went into this book with a lot of antagonism for Elvis. I like his music, casually, but I’ve seen a few documentaries on him in recent years that made me really dislike him as a person. Let me tell you, this book didn’t change that opinion whatsoever. Sledge, Broox (October 23, 1985). " 'Elvis and Me' shows good, bad". Enterprise-Journal. McComb, Mississippi. p.11.

The only other actor that A24 lists right now is Dagmara Dominczyk, who most recently starred in Succession season 4 and Hello Tomorrow!, but whose career has included roles in The Lost Daughter, The Assistant and The Count of Monte Cristo. Priscilla trailer Sofia Coppola is the daughter of Francis Ford Coppola, but she has become a renowned filmmaker in her own right, including being nominated for Best Director at the Oscars for Lost in Translation and winning the Best Original Screenplay trophy for the movie. Here is a look at her complete filmography of feature movies:Elvis Presley may be the King, but in Sofia Coppola’s latest film, Priscilla , it’s Priscilla Presley who gets the royal treatment. The biopic, inspired by Priscilla’s 1985 memoir, Elvis and Me , shows what it was like to be married to one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century. “We know so much about Elvis,” Coppola says in a behind-the-scenes featurette for the film. “And it was really important to me to show the story through Priscilla’s experiences.”
