About this deal

The language is simplistic, but it does the job very well, bringing Belfast to life, and really showing what life during the Troubles was like. There's a strong sense of fear throughout, but despite this, people get on with life. There's a risk of young children, mainly boys, being recruited into paramilitary groups, and of everyone being injured for simply being born. An amazing novel, highly recommended. Across the Barricades, widely read since 1972, was reissued along with other Kevin and Sadie books in Penguin’s The Originals series of young adult novels in 2016 Her first novel Liam's Daughter was an adult-orientated novel published in 1963. Her first children's novel was The Twelfth Day of July (the first of the five Kevin and Sadie books) in 1970. It is expected that upwards of 50 lodges from Donegal, Cavan, Leitrim and Monaghan, Northern Ireland and further afield will take part in the parade which begins close to St John’s Parish Church at 12.30pm. The return parade starts at 3.15pm with the Limavady Lodges breaking ranks on Protestant Street to allow visitors to pass through to their buses on Church Street. TOBERMORE There will be a total of eight districts on parade – Garvagh, Castledawson, Magherafelt, Kilrea, Ballyronan, Tamlaght O’Crilly, Moneymore and the hosts Tobermore District LOL No. 11. Why is it controversial?

The parade, which is approximately two miles, will move off from the Assembly Field on the Omagh Road at 12.30pm. The parade, which will cover a route of 1.7miles, will leave the assembly area in Enterprise Crescent at 11.30am and includes more than 20 bands and a large selection of lambeg drums. During the Troubles (late 1960s to late 1990s), the Twelfth was often accompanied by riots and paramilitary violence. Of the five in total, two were killed by Republican groups and three were killed by Loyalist groups. The boys' mother was a Catholic, and their home was in a mainly Protestant housing estate. The killings provoked widespread anger from both Catholics and Protestants. A wreath laying ceremony will take place at the Cenotaph in the grounds of the City Hall shortly before 10.30am and the parade will then proceed via Donegall Square West, Bedford Street, Dublin Road, Shaftsbury Square, Bradbury Place, Lisburn Road, Balmoral Avenue and Malone Road to Barnett’s Demesne.

Kevin and Sadie live just a few streets away from each other. They live in identical houses, speak the same language and have very similar childhoods in many ways. But they are completely different from one another, because Kevin is Catholic and Sadie is Protestant.

The return parade will commence at 4pm approximately.
