About this deal

Insert the lower third of each stem into a small container filled with a moist rooting medium, such as a combination of one-third compost, one-third peat moss or vermiculite, and one-third sand.

Azaleas are fairly easy, low maintenance shrubs that provide striking spring color. Choose the right species and varieties for your garden, and you will enjoy these pretty plants for years to come with little effort. Related: Magnesium: A magnesium deficiency looks the same as iron deficiency except that it is mainly older leaves that are affected, whereas iron deficiency affects young leaves. Plants need magnesium to use iron, so a magnesium deficiency can trigger an iron deficiency. Mulching around the top of containers will help to replenish nutrients, keep the mix acidic, and conserve moisture in a pot. Mulch has other benefits for Azaleas besides soil fertility. Azaleas like moist soil and mulch can hold moisture and reduce soil evaporation. Mulch can also help keep soil from getting compacted when you walk on it. I have seen both evergreen and deciduous azaleas grown in pots as the roots stay relatively shallow.

Feeding azaleas

Place a little growing medium in the base of the new container and place the plant gently into the new pot. Mulch is one of the best options for keeping soil fertile enough for Azaleas. If you apply mulch on top of the soil every year, it will break down over time and add nutrients to the soil. In most cases, this will keep the soil fertile enough for Azaleas, and it’s good for Azaleas in other ways too.

Common pests that can affect azaleas include nematodes, mealybugs, aphids, bark scale, spider mites, and lace bugs. Lace bugs are more likely to target shrubs that are grown in areas of full sun. When you plant Azaleas, it’s a good idea to get your soil ready for them by incorporating fertilizer if you need it. A soil test can tell you what nutrients your soil already has, and the results often come with fertilizer recommendations. Calcium: If your Azaleas have a calcium deficiency (or too much calcium – the effect is the same), it will also begin with chlorosis. After that, you’ll see an impact on the leaf tips, which may brown or twist. Ladybugs, which are natural predators of lace bugs, can be released on the affected plants. Caterpillars

Moving azaleas

Create a planting hole two to three times the width of the root ball and the same depth as the container it’s currently growing in. Harden off plants in May by transferring them from warm to cooler conditions and standing them outdoors when danger of frost is past. Plunge the pots to the rim in a bed of ericaceous peat-free compostto avoid the danger of frequent drying out.

Our Garden Planner can produce a personalised calendar of when to sow, plant and harvest for your area. NotesFor Azaleas, you should choose a mulch made up of acidic materials, like leaf mould, pine needles, or conifer wood chips. Azaleas need phosphorus to grow flower buds. It used to be believed that using extra phosphorus fertilizer could help Azaleas have more flowers, but scientists have found that this isn’t true. Unless your soil has a phosphorus deficiency, applying phosphorus fertilizer won’t help your Azaleas bloom. Ammonium sulfate is a fertilizer with a strong acidifying quality that can also provide nitrogen to your compost. Simply sprinkle the ammonium sulfate onto the compost or mix it in with other amendments before adding it to the compost pile. Is peat free compost ericaceous? The growing medium in the pots for Azaleas, indoors or out, should be kept moist but not allowed to become drenched or waterlogged.

Finally, you could also look at adding organic matter to the soil. This could be things like manure, leaves, grass clippings or kitchen waste. All of these materials can help to increase the acidity in the soil over time. The symptoms of nutrient deficiency can have other causes which can’t be solved with fertilizer. Compacted soil, too much or too little water, insect infestations, plant diseases, and even using too much fertilizer can cause these symptoms. To solve your Azaleas’ health problems, you need to identify the cause. Fertilizer will only help if soil infertility is the problem. For an overview of common problems affecting Azaleas, read this article. My experience has taught me that azaleas are tough shrubs that require very little attention if grown in a suitable location with good drainage.A rule of thumb that I use is, if the kettle whereyou are growing has limescale then you have hard water (alkaline), so avoid watering your ericaceous plants with tap water,” says Horticultural Consultant Colin Skelly. Feeding You will probably have heard of ericaceous compost in terms of what you can grow in it. It is an acidic compost, and suitable for growing rhododendrons, camellias, azaleas, heathers, and other plants that dislike alkaline soil, also known as lime-hating plants. The name ‘ericaceous’ comes from the Latin name for heathers, Erica. Alternatively, try inserting four or five cuttings in a small pot covered with a polythene bag. Flimsy opaque polythene bags with one or two holes perforated in them are suitable as long as they transmit a good level of light, and cuttings under them may suffer less stress than under clear polythene. Using fertilizer correctly can be complicated. If you’ve ever stood in the fertilizer aisle at the garden center and been overwhelmed by all the options, keep reading to learn which fertilizers are best for Azaleas and how to use them. Plus, learn what other plants you can feed with your Azalea fertilizer, what time of year fertilizer should be applied and what fertilizers correct specific nutrient deficiencies in the soil surrounding your Azaleas.
