About this deal

We look at the key benefits of this GPS unit and also the navigational experience you get when you import a .gpx file.

Pretty much every GPS device allows you to enter a route which can then be followed stage by stage. Most devices also feature an alarm that can be set to notify you when you’re within a certain distance or proximity of the way point. Garmin have had this feature on the GPS is from many years. Proximity alarms are useful when you risk tumbling into a vast chasm from which there’s no return! After planning the route on my computer I show you how to transfer it onto your Garmin Fenix watch using the Connect app on a mobile phone. Considering the eTrex 10 is a second-generation service, the GPS is incredibly accurate. In a side by side comparison with an InReach Explorer + and a Garmin 64 GPS, the accuracy has proved to be nearly as close to the makr as some of the most modern and powerful devices on the market. For the first walk and talk I take the Garmin GPSMAP 66i Outdoor GPS unit and put it through it's paces in the Simonside Hills, above the village of Rothbury, Northumberland. As an entry level model, it’s easy to outstrip the Garmin eTrex 10 GPS – its eTrex siblings feature colour screens, more storage and helpful additions like an altimeter, in the case of the Garmin eTrex 32x. Equally, for more professional-level users the Garmin GPSMAP 65 range offers serious firepower for only a little more bulk. However, bear in mind that you’re more than doubling and then trebling the price of the little Garmin eTrex 10 to step up to those two examples respectively, so very much a case of horses for courses. Garmin eTrex 10 GPS review: verdict

No, which is a shame as having eTrex 10 maps would make life so much easier. This GPS unit has a very small amount of storage and no micro-SD slot, and the only mapping you have available is the global data pre-installed. The default display is ‘Numeric Degress’ and the ‘North Reference’ set to magnetic. If you need more accuracy in your bearings and route planning, change this to ‘Mils’. But, only if you are confident navigating in this format and you’re using a military style compass. WaypointsThis two-way satellite communicator from Garmin is a great piece of kit, but let’s see how it performs in the hills. The sun was shining and the video hopefully brings a bit of insight into how to use a Garmin Oregon 700, Oregon 750 and Oregon 750t GPS unit on the hill. Nothing beats navigating with a map and compass but sometimes for ease-of-use it’s much simpler to use the magnetic compass built into the Garmin eTrex 10. You’ll now see a numeric keypad and navigation arrows. Use the keypad to enter the coordinates from your map. If you don’t need to change a particular digit, use the left and right arrows to navigate past it. Out for a lovely evening walk, putting the Garmin eTrex 10 through its paces, the basics of GPS navigation.
