Speaking of which, you really can have your own car in F1 2020. In the new My Team section, you have a whole separate Career-style mode in which you make up the eleventh team on the grid. This means creating your own team from scratch, deciding your team name, setting your team colours and livery, recruiting drivers, and managing all of the commercial agreements and the expectations each of them place on you. Truth be told, it’s a complicated mode – you’re responsible for everything you would be in Career mode, such as directing the car’s research and development, testing, and racing, in addition to a whole lot more. It’s easy to become overwhelmed by all the text on screen, even though the game tries its best to remind you of what needs doing through voice over prompts. It perhaps feels a little bit too F1 Manager to us, preferring the more focused driver Career mode in the longer term, but this is clearly a welcome addition and your mileage may vary. As with every iteration of the F1 game, we are spending a lot of time in game. We always start by jumping in to the career mode, and this year is no different. The career mode in F1 2020 is an improvement on last years, and the new MyTeam game mode brings a lot of new features to the table. One important setting that hasn’t been mentioned yet is the Gearbox Setting. Whether you use a Manual or an Automatic Gearbox is completely a personal preference. A manual setting does allow you to drive better and faster but can also make you mistake-prone. However, I do recommend using an automatic gearbox for controller/keyboard drivers (again, for simplicity and better experience) with pad users switching to manual if comfortable. Racing wheel drivers can take advantage of the shift paddles and utilise the manual gearbox to the fullest. SET YOUR SKILL LEVELThe split screen multiplayer option works extremely well and allows different car set ups for inexperienced sofa buddies who may not have played the game before. Kudos to Codemasters for adding in an option which may be seen as inessential these days. Online multiplayer is as good as ever with no problem finding races or tournaments so even if you bought the game just for multiplayer larks, you’d be happy. Wrong way down a one way street Shark Tale There’s a fair degree of depth involved but enough initial hand-holding and explanations not to make the management aspect too daunting. In fact it became an enjoyable between race mission to make sure the team was succeeding in the right departments before I took off my suit and donned the fireproof leathers. AI driving has been improved. They’re much more up for it than I remember, especially at harder difficulties. At Master difficulty and above, the AI hound your gearbox, dive bombing your inside line or toughing it out the outside. Overtakes aren’t a procession and they’re more aware, making little moves to cover you and out you off. The result is that racing feels more tactical and challenging. Expert is good enough for experienced drivers, but if that’s too easy, Master, Legend and Ultimate are available. Career Mode has been expanded, and you can now start your career with a full season in the junior category and advance to F1; or go down the route of the new My Team mode. This allows you to create a 21st team, and you can sign your own drivers (initially from the youth categories), power units, create your own (predictably garish) team livery and assign cash/resource points to develop your car.
