To present the forensic evidence, the Crown employed the services of Dr. J.M. Watt, an expert toxicologist and Professor of Pharmacology at the Witwatersrand University. In summing up, before giving his verdict, the judge pointed out that the Crown had been unable to prove conclusively that Cowle and Sproat had died of strychnine poisoning. "It does not convince me, nor does it convict the accused," he said.[3] Awesome physical control, enviable vocal range and precision, faultless timing, and the ability to effect startling changes of mood almost in mid-sentence are some of the technical attributes demonstrated by the Berkoff-inspired actor George Dillon in his extraordinary one-man triple bill. What gives the show its guts though, is the emotional depth and complex humanity that Dillon also brings to each of the characters he portrays. Scottish Immigration to America in the 1700's was undertaken by angry Scots following defeat at the hands of the English at the 1746 Battle of Culloden. The Scots settled in all of the 13 colonies, but mainly in South Carolina and Virginia. Strong trade links had already been established between the city of Glasgow in Scotland and Virginia trading in tobacco and many immigrants gained passage on the trade ships. For specific examples and a list of political, economic, environmental and social reasons and push and pull factors of Scottish Immigration to America refer to: This monument is erected to the memory of Hugh Blair of Dunrod, Esq., by his mournful widow, who lost in him a faithful and an affectionate husband, his infant children a kind and tender father, his friends, a warm and generous friend, his tenants and servants, a just and gentle master, the poor and afflicted, a liberal benefactor. He died the 2nd of May 1771, aged 27 years. In this final piece, whilst a man is considering his own suicide, he falls asleep and dreams that he has killed himself and travelled to another planet where people live in harmony and remain undefiled by evil. However, over time, his own presence defiles these people and he believes he can only redeem them by offering himself as a sacrifice for their sin. Yet he is met with hostility and is treated as a madman. The man is only reconciled by believing that humanity is not fundamentally evil, but has only fallen from grace. It is a story of its time, in that it reflects much of the Orthodox Church’s effect upon the Russian nation. He concludes by compassionately imploring his onlookers to love one another, even as we should love ourselves.

And in Dostoevsky’s Dream of a Ridiculous Man, adapted by Dillon and his director Laurence Boswell, a despairing philosopher dreams of a pre-lapserian world of innocence and beauty which his own savage sensuality corrupts until it, too, scorns his idealism. “ This is what we must fight against“, he says as they put him away for his own good, “ and I shall.” Important facts about the history of Scottish Immigration to America and US laws that effected the migrants from Scotland are contained in the following Facts Sheet and history timeline.

In September 2005, a drag musical "Daisy's Well Hung" starring Robert Coleman as "Daisy" was staged at the Women's Jail on Constitution Hill in Johannesburg, where de Melker had been imprisoned prior to her hanging. This show attempted to transform the dour figure of De Melker into a poltergeist of a husband-killing femme fatale. Rhodes Cowle had died of arsenic poisoning; The coffee flask held traces of arsenic; The accused had put the arsenic into the flask (‘I can see no escape from the conclusion that the accused put arsenic into the flask..,') on the Wednesday prior to Rhodes Cowle's death; and The defence of suicide was untenable. When the judge finally turned to pass sentence on Mrs De Melker, her face whitened, and for a moment all the strength seemed to leave her body. Since the cost of the voyage was high, many emigrants became indentured servants to gain passage to America and pay off their debt there. They signed contracts lasting five to seven years, after which they could pursue their own interests. Daisy de Melker was born Daisy Hancorn-Smith in Seven Fountains in what was then the Cape Colony. She was one of eleven children. When she was twelve, Daisy went to Bulawayo, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) to live with her father and two of her brothers. Three years later, she became a boarder at the Good Hope Seminary School in Cape Town. She returned to Rhodesia in 1903, but soon moved to the Colony of Natal and enrolled at the Berea Nursing Home in Durban. [ citation needed]

Here lies the body of Margret Robison, who died Feb 3rd 1771, aged 37 years. Erected by her husband Hugh Sharp. Daisy's motives for killing her son Rhodes remain unclear. In the case of her first two husbands, the motive seemed to be financial gain. Rhodes seems to have been under the impression that he would come into an inheritance at age 21. One theory is that he was demanding more than his mother could give him and was becoming a burden to her. The most obvious answer is that he had become a disappointment to Daisy; she had pampered him all his life, but he rarely showed her any consideration in return.
