About this deal

Disclaimer: I am in no way associated with Shure or any other company. My opinions are mine, and my own. The frequency response delivered by SRH1540's makes for a great listening experience, and they're some of the most comfortable headphones you'll wear. However, despite the cheaper price point, the SRH940's are still the most accurate model on offer. To summarise, it's likely you'll prefer the 940 in your studio, and the 1540 for your Hi-Fi. Shure's typical MMCX connectors. I hated them on their SE(iem) line, but I actually like them quite a bit for their headphones! This is different from SRH940. SRH1840 and SRH1440 uses the same connectors from my memory. vsSRH940: Think of SRH1540 as a SRH940 with more bass, richer mids, and more tamed treble. SRH1540 are marginally better in almost all ways, besides clarity. I believe it's worth the price difference.

If you are looking for very accurate neutral headphones for video or sound editing - these are great, although pricey for what they deliver considering the alternatives. Richard Strauss (Mester-Pasadena) - Also Sprach Zarathustra (opening) (Classical): The granddaddy of bass is in the opening 1:50 of this recording, and I've heard it only once on a large and expensive loudspeaker system in Cleveland. For most people, that experience would be indistinguishable from being in a fairly strong earthquake. The SRH1540 conveys as much of that experience as is possible on headphones. The tympani also have excellent impact here.Exceptional comfort comes from the dual frame assembly and large Alcantara covered ear pads fitted with memory-type foam. With a dual frame assembly you get a comfortable fit and less pressure on the top of your head, while the large pads fit comfortably around your ears and provide long-term comfort without excessive pressure or heat build up. Just a disclaimer : I code test tones for headphones (I'm preparing a new set of test bench and analyser for measuring headphones), I do some science analysis on audio/image and while amateur, I can do mimicry, sing and play a few instruments. Not bragging, but just a bit of a notification that I know what I'm listening to. And this was actually disappointing, the 1540s leak what I believe is A LOT of sound when volume is increased to "enjoyable" levels (for me). At least I saw my co-worker head-bopping to one of the songs I had playing... lol. I asked her if she actually knew what song it was and yeah, she knew... So that's a fail for me there. Soundstage is very good for closed cans. I've listened exclusively to open cans on my reference system for the last few years, so I'm very used to the open rendering of the music. While the Shures will never be confused with open cans, they are very open in sound. There's good air and imaging there. They do form a very 3D image that circles your listening space. They don't fall victim to the "three blob" soundstage that many headphones produce. Imaging is believable with good space and placement. It's among the best I've ever heard in closed cans. I'd say it's very accurate within the confines of a closed can system.

A dual-exit cable – one wire connected to each earcup – has a 3.5mm end that fits into your portable device, but a 6.5mm gold-plated adapter for use with higher-end systems comes supplied too. Imaging: SRH1840 was widely praised for superb imaging ability. SRH1540 also has great imaging capabilities. Although not as widely spread as SRH1840's imaging, it's still very good. Note too that an increasing number of wireless headphones (and especially noise-cancelling models) can work passively via an aux cable. To keep the focus here purely on wired headphones, however, we’re excluding those products. That gives us plenty of space to talk about cabled headphones and earphones that simply output audio and, for the most part, don't do anything else. And you’ll want them to last as long as possible – the Shures perform superbly. You only need a moment with them to appreciate their dynamic and diligently detailed sound.

Aside from that issue, the 1540 can be worn seemingly all day without becoming hot, or head shift inducing. Simply placing the SRH1540 on your head doesn’t seem to provide a remarkable amount of passive noise isolation. In the office, we could still hear nearby discussions, and loud construction work bled through, remaining as distracting as ever, if just a little bit less edgy. But with music playing at even moderate volumes, we managed to shut out the world around us. On a recent flight, we missed having active noise-cancelling for toning down the drone of the plane’s engines, but, again, the headphones had no problem delivering crystal clear audio from movies and music, even at moderate volume settings. While we own a pair of Phiaton Chord MS 530and generally prefer them for travel, we still wound up pulling out the Shure cans for sheer listening pleasure. Performance Our goal is to highlight those options that we think sound best, so our choices don't include super-bass-boosted options, simply because they don't provide an accurate audio experience. Finding mega-bass headphones isn't hard, however—if anything, it’s been the trend for years now, and finding accurate pairs is the problem. So is the difference in sound between srh1540 and srh940, just a matter of distance between ears and drivers ? (or different pads) . While it may be recessed, it leads to a bigger sense of space in the sound, which aid the already great soundstage on the 1540.

Two detachable cables. I don’t really understand why they supplied two identical cables. I would’ve preferred the cables be different in length, for some variety and versatility. Not completely. I thought the srh1540 got a cleaner sound. So, there's an improvement somehow, even if it's not striking. vsSRH1840: SRH1540 are obviously very different from SRH1840. SRH1840 have more flat sound. Both are superb. SRH1840 has better soundstage and imaging, while SRH1540 has better bass capability and detail. Detail: SRH940 was praised for it's details. In fact, they had more detail then SRH1840. I feel like SRH1540 is closer to SRH940 in terms of detail. Stunning details. In a way, it reminded me of my UERMs, the most detail audio gear I've owned. They manage to portray micro details without forcing them.
