About this deal

There seems to be a lot of confusion over what a SubPod is and does. SubPod is not a traditional composting system and arguably shouldn’t be compared with any of them. SubPod is a worm composting system used to deal with food waste and related organic material. It uses compost worms rather than heat-based decomposition to produce worm compost rather than traditional compost. SubPod is a vermicompost or vermiculture system. It’s not the same process and yet the manufacturers, in their UK promotional materials, seem to be trying g to compare the two as if they are the same. Worm composting is a separate thing. In British English we don’t use the word compost to describe worm compost or vermicompost systems. We tend to be more succinct and call it worm compost. The Subpod® not only disposes of your organic waste, but is also the ‘growth hub’ for your garden. The movement of worms and microbes between your Subpod® and garden bed builds soil fertility and plant health, allowing you to grow nutrient-dense food at home with ease. What is a Subpod?

Let me start responding to your points by firstly reiterating where we share common goals. It’s to get people gardening and composting. Personally I started gardening as a preschool child and went on to own a commercial salads nursery and teach horticulture at various colleges. So I’ve a lot of composting experience. It’s apparently simple, modular and modern and composts my kitchen and green food waste by using composting worms and microbes to do the work. Ohh and it’s largely buried underground .. though I’m not terribly clear why that’s a benefit and not a disadvantage!

Understanding Worms and Microbes

The beautiful thing about underground composting is it requires so much less space than traditional composting. The worms and microbes are in their natural habitat and they simply don’t need masses of space to power through large amounts of food waste.

Ants tend to colonize a Subpod if the system is too dry. This can happen if your worm blankets aren't regularly soaked, or if the food waste is not stirred in. If your scraps are left to sit on top of the bedding of the Subpod, even under the worm blankets, they can dry out and cause issues. Balance Your Inputs: For optimal composting, maintain a balance between 'greens' (fruit and vegetable scraps) and 'browns' (dry leaves, paper). We have schools like Lindisfarne Grammar School in Northern New South Wales in Australia, who have set up a large school gardening project and composting system. They've chosen us as their composting partner, and have 42 Subpod installed around their school grounds! Their students add food waste to them, harvest the compost and grow lush plants and vegetables Pest free is another issue I have with this product. I’ve seen a lot of feed bins on farms and in stables that claim to be pest-free. They are often made of plastic or metal and resist the rodents until they chew a hole in them. Even galvanised sheet metal succumbs to rats after a while. They just chew through it. So I’m not sure how the plastic SubPod is going to resist a rat or two! You comment about the above ground systems being more susceptible to heating. Correct, they are, simply because that’s the natural way in which composting works. Heat is created by the chemical and biological process of decomposition.

Food waste is a significant global issue. According to the United Nations, approximately one-third of all food produced worldwide is wasted. This waste doesn't just represent lost resources; it also contributes to environmental problems. When food waste ends up in landfills, it decomposes without oxygen, producing methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. One of the biggest reasons people don’t compost is they believe they don’t have enough space for it. But while it’s true the natural process of composting requires space and soil for the worms and microbes to do their thing with your food waste, it’s not a restriction anymore, thanks to Subpod! I’m all in favour of anything that encourages people to grow veg crops in the garden. So when I saw the advert for Subpod I was intrigued. SubPod claims to the best composting system I’ve ever seen, odour free, pest free, neighbour approved and with five-minute assembly. Hold off adding animal products for the moment such as meat, fish, or dairy in the beginning. At a later date when the system is thriving you can then add small amounts By composting with Subpod, you're not just managing your waste; you're actively contributing to a healthier planet. It's a small change in your daily routine that can have a big impact on our world. So, let's turn waste into wonder and make a difference, one Subpod at a time.Welcome to the Subpod family, where we're turning waste into wonder, one Subpod at a time. Happy composting! Compost systems need to be vermin-proof to prevent attracting unwanted wildlife such as rats, possums, or larger animals. But what we consider a “pest” isn’t always what it seems.
