About this deal

Remember, tremolo is to do with rapid changes in volume. A “tremolo bar” (more accurately called a vibrato system) actually produces vibrato.

To help you with this, I have created a more detailed post on how you can install a tremol-no system yourself at home. Of course, you can also choose to have a skilled guitar tech/luthier take care of it for you.The pedal will fluctuate the pitch of your signal before it gets to your amplifier, giving you that distinct vibrato sound. I was thinking of some designs for an adjustable tremolo stopper, and then realised there was a common household piece of gear that was a lot cheaper than a Tremol-no. Sure it would require a little permanent surgery, but that didn’t bother me. I’m sure a lot of you won’t be either. I wanted to go from floating to dive-only so I could use my D-Tuna, and this little contraption would enable me to do this.

Then, with the bar above the guitar strings, play a chord and move the bar up and down. You don’t need to press it down hard, a little movement will give you the vibrato effect. If your guitar doesn’t have a vibrato system, you can still get the effect by buying a vibrato effects pedal. It comes from the Italian word vibrare which means “to vibrate”. And that’s exactly what’s happening to both the guitar string and sound. If you do experience unwanted movement with the Tremol-No, it is likely caused by the setup of the Tremol-No or by an issue with the guitar itself. I have covered these issues and their respective fixes in the aforementioned installation article. Ease of Use The Deep-C clamp (pictured on the left with the thumbscrew in it) is equally easy to use. Position it up the sliding arm to allow dive-only movement of the tremolo, or move it out of the way (as pictured) if you want the tremolo to have its full range of motion. CompatibilityA lot of guitar amps, especially modeling amps aimed at beginner guitarists, have built in effects. To use the tremolo effect, simply select it on your amp and set it to the rhythm that you want. Tremolo is a method of playing guitar that creates a “trembling” effect on the sound. It comes from the Italian word tremolando which means “to tremble”. Don’t get me wrong – it’s an easy mistake to make as both can sound quite similar, and it’s also not helped by the music industry (I’m looking at you, “tremolo arm”!). But, did you know that there’s actually two types of tremolo for guitar? And that your guitar’s tremolo arm isn’t actually used for tremolo?

Tremolo is a modulation up and down in volume, whereas vibrato is a modulation up and down in pitch. Again, it provides a rhythmic element to the music, but it’s often a lot more rapid than the tremolo effects. It’s mostly used to give a sense of excitement and urgency to a guitar part. Using the Tremol-No is fairly straightforward. Switching the bridge from hardtail to floating (or vice versa) is easy and takes mere seconds. Anyone can do it. I’ve also recorded this clip of me playing my guitar using vibrato. Here’s me playing another guitar scale, but with vibrato. It’s a lot subtler vs tremolo.

For example, listen to the song “How Soon is Now?” by The Smiths. The first thing you’ll hear is a guitar riff that’s played through a tremolo effect. Without this effect, the guitar riff would be pretty boring (sorry, Johnny Marr). Some guitars, you can set up like this relatively easily. If you can put the bridge-base flat to the guitar top and give the springs a bit of a tighten, you’ll eliminate some of the problems of a fully-floating tremolo. You’ll still be able to dive and wobble the bridge about but you won’t be able to pull up beyond the strings’ usual pitch. When combined with other effects, like pinch harmonics, you can get an effect that would be at home in any heavy metal solo. To avoid common pitfalls, however, it is essential to set the device up correctly and apply Loctite 242 to the threads of the thumbscrews or set screws (depending on which screw type you choose to use). As a user of a Floyd Upgrades trem stopper, I would say this home-made effort is good for string changes, but that's where I would leave it, to be honest. Why?

Most of the time, vibrato sounds like a slight “wobble” in the sound that’s a much subtler effect than tremolo. If it’s used a little, vibrato can add a lot of interest and feeling to a guitar part. Adding vibrato can keep longer notes from feeling flat or boring. You can also get vibrato effects pedals. These have a more “steady” sound, as there’s an equal time between the pitch bends. The build quality of the Tremol-No is okay. There are things that it does well, but also things that can be improved upon.I have installed Tremol-Nos in various guitars and have not run into any compatibility issues so far. All popular tremolo systems are supported, even though you do need to make sure that the Tremol-No model you use is compatible with the tremolo system. More on that later. To start with the positives, the device is made from the right materials, has a quality finish and is constructed with narrow tolerances. Especially the tolerances are important, as you don’t want any play in the components that causes the bridge to wobble. By vibrating the guitar string, either with your fretting hand or a vibrato system, you’re changing the pitch of the sound up and down. What does vibrato sound like I’ve made a recording showing this. This is just one example of how I use vibrato to make notes more interesting! How to play vibrato on your guitar
