About this deal

Though not the hose, the sprinkler will be a big deal for you – it’s lovely and if you’ve only ever used a sprinkler with a lever, this variable control will be a big step up. In this short buyers guide we will highlight a few things to look for in a good expandable hose and also a few tips on how to get the most life out of them. It’s usually better to pay a little more than to end up paying twice.

For most medium-size gardens, a 30 m expandable hose will be perfect. These hoses only measure around 10 metres long when not in use, so, as you can imagine, they’re easy to store and help with conserving storage space. In a large garden, a 45 m hose will give you plenty to work with. These retract down to approximately 15 m. If you have a large, sprawling garden with lots of trees and shrubs to manoeuvre around, I would recommend choosing one of the more durable products on offer. I say this because you will be dragging your hose a long way, and it will need a strong outer webbing to be able to withstand this type of terrain. This hose has been specifically designed for resilience, with an upgraded core consisting of a whopping 13 layers of latex.Like all of the other products in this article, this hose comes with its own spray gun with eight types of spray settings. The gun is made from decent quality plastic and has a common thumb trigger design. I don’t know how well it would hold up to being banged about or dropped, but that could be said for all plastic spray guns, and they are easy and cheap to replace anyway. It’s a durable and flexible hose pipe, manufactured using modern materials which lead to it weighing only 1.25 kg. Given that hoses get heavier when full of water, starting with such a light base can be invaluable. It’s worth bearing in mind that expandable hoses can be less durable than traditional ones. They need to be made from materials that facilitate the expansion and contraction of the hose, which means they can’t always be as tough as traditional plastic ones. Signs of Good Quality However, the first time you use this particular model, you are advised to stretch it out by hand little by little while filling it to loosen it up, something I didn’t have to do with the ANSIO or the FitLife expandable hoses. It’s not a big issue, and doesn’t take long, but I thought it would be worth mentioning. The spray head comes with 10 different spray settings – most models tend to come with around 8 – making this one of the top expandable hoses if you’re looking for range and versatility.

The hose head also gives the option to leave the spray on, which is an improvement on some other hose designs where you have to wear your hand out holding down the trigger. The elasticated fabric casing that surrounds the expandable hose is hardwearing; however, you do still need to take care dragging it across very rough terrain. That said, it will stand up well to regular usage, and can handle sharp corners too. Best expandable hose overall: Expandable Garden Hose, Upgraded 3-Layer Latex Hose Pipe– No kinks! The KETTOYA Expandable Garden Hose is less bulky than some other hoses, with a smooth outer casing that makes it extremely compact when not in use. This spray gun connector, despite my reservations about the material used, is actually very solid and has a fixed in filter to help prevent water leaking out. Several of my customers have used this particular model for a while and I haven’t heard a single complaint about leaking being a problem so it seems to be doing the job it was intended for.

Similarly, look for a more durable hose if you will be pulling it across hard surfaces such as concrete, or using it frequently to clean your car, garden furniture or patio. A more durable design will cope better with the wear and tear inflicted by these hard surfaces. However, if you simply need to water a few flower beds or pots then a less durable option will be fine for your needs. One of the best things about expandable garden hoses is how much space they save in the garden. The Homeme Strong Expandable Garden Hose is no exception; it even comes with its own compact storage bag so it can be hung out the way. The level of power provided by this hose is excellent, especially compared to other expandable models, and it comes with an 8-setting spray head – it’s just as useful for washing the car as it is for watering the plants.Expandable hoses are useful things to have lying around. Whether it is for cleaning mud of your kid’s bikes, washing down the garden path, or simply giving the lawn a good watering, these versatile garden tools can help get the job done. With the rising of automatic hose reels, coupled with these marvels, watering the garden is a doddle and has never been this organised or easy as well as hassle free, no more arduous recoiling yards of hose, to only go and do it all again the next day. I find the new expandable hose pipe I have been testing to be every bit as easy as the automatic watering systems I’ve been working on recently. Us testing our Expandable Garden Hose, Upgraded 3-Layer Latex Hose Pipe That said, some care needs to be taken around thorny plants and spikey gravel – despite its strong construction, it’s still not completely puncture proof! The casing is made from 2200D polyester which is pretty heavyweight, protecting the hose from general wear and tear. This covering may catch and fray when pulled across rougher surfaces, so that is something to be aware of. The plastic used in the gun’s construction is strong and sturdy and I got the impression it would last a while as long as it isn’t dropped or mishandled in some way. There is some soft rubber coating for comfort and ribbed sections for extra grip.

Strong outer webbing – expandable hoses need strong outer webbing to protect the core from rough garden terrain. The outer webbing also has to withstand expanding and contracting with the expansion of the hose, so it’s worth making sure it’s hardy Best alternative: The FitLife Expandable Garden Hose Pipe or the ANSIO Garden Hose Pipe Expandable Water Hose These happen to have the best 100ft hoses in my opinion too. [tested and proven personally] This is as heavy duty and close to commercial quality as you’ll get here. The hose is 50ft in length and extremely lightweight and easy to adjust and move around the garden – pretty much inline with the ANSIO and the FIT in terms of ease of use and manoeuvrability when compared directly. From its contracted length of about 5.5 metres, it’ll expand to a staggering 16 metres. Once finished, it’ll simply retract again for easy storage. The next thing you’ll notice is the lovely brass connectors. Or at least I did when compared to the other fitments I have around the garden. This is a really nice piece of kit. Like our two previous products featured above, this KINGTOP model has been made to a higher standard than some cheaper brands and has similar design features to the FitLife expandable hose, such as a double layer latex inner tube and a knitted fabric covering it.It’s constructed from hard-wearing triple latex, has an elasticated outer coating, and features high-quality, sturdy brass fittings that are easy to connect. Another point in favour of this spray head is that it connects to the hose using brass fittings. Many expandable hoses connect to the spray head with a plastic fitting, which can prove to be a weak point over time. It’s worth pointing out that, due to its longer length, this may not be the best expandable hose for people who struggle with heavy lifting. Once filled, it’s one of the weightier options.
