In a devastated world, living to the rhythms of the unbearable winds which rule it, an organization selects, raises and trains children from a very young age so that they will become the next horde. The 34th horde counts 23 members; each has a specific function (tracer, scribe, troubadour, hunter, protector, carer, maker of fire, wood maker, etc.). They have been traveling the world for over 30 years in search of the origin of the wind.

Even from the beginning, there are hints that this quest is misguided. For example, in the first chapter they pass a city. If there is a city further upwind from where the groups start, then why, after hundreds of years of these hordes, haven't they moved the starting point further upwind? Other revelations in further chapters raise more such issues. The characters themselves aren't immune from wondering, and this becomes one of the major themes of the book: what gives meaning to your quest? or to your life? How do you continue fighting in the face of enormous obstacles when you're not even sure that what you're fighting for makes sense. The characters are all very different and thus find different reasons for continuing. Let me tell you one thing though, whether you are a speculative fiction reader or not, you've *never* read anything like this book. And I do mean NEVER. More than just treating the book as a simple medium to deliver a message, Damasio has conceived this specific work as a book universe. The medium is intimately linked to the message and well, I'm sad to say it, but this remarkable achievement simply makes the book intranslatable. You'd have to rewrite entire parts of the book to make them work in another language. It'd be a tremendous work and you'd never be sure whether or not you'd be betraying the author's original speech. Une épopée pleine de rebondissements, d'évènements inattendus, étonnants et inexplorés, pour me divertir, me passionner ; une flanquée de personnages superbement croqués au point de se sentir familière avec chacun d'entre eux, un collectif soudé qui me permettraient de me sentir moins seule ; une écriture poétique qui viendrait nourrir mon âme ; des messages philosophiques qui enrichirait mon esprit et me rendrait plus forte. Un univers onirique, des paysages d'une telle diversité, d'une réelle beauté, qui m'enchanteraient, paysages souvent rudes et sauvages, depuis les déserts de sable jaunes, les vallées encaissées, en passant par d'interminables marécages gris, des landes vertes aux nuages violets sur lesquels le soleil perçant ouvre des flaques jaunes, jusqu'aux abrupts glaciers volcaniques…sur mon île au paysage figé, je pourrais ainsi voyager !

Per ciascun personaggio, ad inizio paragrafo, vi è un simbolo identificativo per consentire al lettore di comprendere quale dei membri dell'orda stia parlando in quel frangente; tramite questo accorgimento, superata l'incertezza iniziale, diventa istintivo discernere chi stia prestando la sua voce in quel determinato paragrafo. Ogni personaggio ricopre un ruolo fondamentale per la riuscita della traversata e possiede dei tratti distintivi, riconoscibili soprattutto dal modo di esporsi. D’ailleurs la plupart des thèmes politiques critiques ne sont pas amenés avec la moindre subtilité – comme par exemple une discussion maladroite et beaucoup trop verbeuse sur le système de classe d’une ville alors que les protagonistes sont en train de s’échapper d’un guet-apens.

In 2020 he participated in the french documentary Un pays qui se tient sage about police violence and the handling of the "Gilets Jaunes" movement. Non sono una che si commuove con i libri. Li posso adorare e amare alla follia, ma di solito non mi riesce proprio di piangere. Comunque, verso la fine, mentre i personaggi se ne andavano uno dopo l'altro, io ho pianto. Ho pianto perchè non mi sono mai sentita vicina alla loro intrinseca disperazione. E tutte le volte che vicino al simbolino del nome c'erano tutte quelle virgole e puntini, io piangevo. Questo libro è riuscito a farmi piangere per della punteggiatura. Come se non bastasse, l'autore inserisce il concetto di Vento-Vivo e lo infarcisce di misticismo, una versione fantastica della teoria delle stringhe. Unico e imperdibile. Pagina dopo pagina, il rapimento della storia coinvolge visceralmente: si diventa parte della mitica 34° Orda alla ricerca dell’Estrema Vetta, si palpita delle stesse preoccupazioni, fatiche e dolori. Si diventa tutt’uno con l’anima dei ventitré personaggi, con quel mondo che attraversano, tanto spietato quanto ammaliante. personaggi, i membri della 34° orda del Controvento, ognuno con il suo stile discorsivo e un proprio vocabolario. In secondo luogo, il limite più grande: avere 23 personaggi e non sfruttarli tutti. I personaggi che servono all'intreccio sono solo cinque o sei, più un paio che non hanno senso per 500 pagine, salvo poi incarnare il deus ex machina per risolvere una situazione di stallo. In questo senso, Martin (per dirne uno) è un maestro, mentre Damasio è uno scolaro che sta affrontando l'esame di riparazione. Era dalla sua uscita che avevo intenzione di leggere questo romanzo e finalmente (complice sia l’uscita dell’edizione economica, sia gli sconti sui libri offerti questo mese) l’ho avuto tra le mani. Prévenons donc les lecteurs naïfs et confiants que la forme de ce roman est complètement absconse et aussi complétement aussi pénible , que inutilement ampoulée . Avrei voluto che questo libro durasse duemila pagine per sapere di ogni singolo momento. Avrei voluto leggere dei momenti in cui i membri dell'orda, ancora ragazzini, si sono conosciuti e hanno cominciato a contrare, avrei voluto sapere di ogni singolo passo compiuto per attraversare il mondo da un capo all'altro.
