A series of twelve prequel novels were published in 1994 by Disney Press, following young Ariel's adventures living under the sea with her sisters and father. The titles are: Green-Eyed Pearl and Nefazia Visits the Palace by Suzanne Weyn; Reflections of Arsulu and The Same Old Song by Marilyn Kaye; Arista's New Boyfriend and Ariel the Spy by M. J. Carr; King Triton, Beware!, The Haunted Palace and The Boyfriend Mix-Up by Katherine Applegate; The Practical-Joke War by Stephanie St. Pierre; The Dolphins of Coral Cove by K. S. Rodriguez; and Alana's Secret Friend by Jess Christopher. [23] In this book Braswell describes Ursula's species as “cecaelia,” [98] a term created by fans in the late 2000s. [99] This was the first Disney-published work to use the name. A challenge in animating Ariel for the 1989 film was the color required to show Ariel in the changing environments, both under the sea and on land, for which the animators required thirty-two color models, not including costume changes. The sea-green color of Ariel's mermaid tail was a hue specially mixed by the Disney paint lab; the color was named "Ariel" after the character. The choice of red as Ariel's hair color was the subject of dispute between the filmmakers and studio executives who wanted the character to have blonde hair. It was noted that red hair contrasted better with Ariel's green tail, red was easier to darken than yellow, and Disney's live-action branch Touchstone Pictures had recently released Splash that had a blonde mermaid; Ariel's red hair was ultimately kept. In the fourth book Mistress of All Evil: A Tale of the Dark Fairy, Circe and Nanny gather Ursula's remains and give her a burial at sea prior to Maleficent's arrival. Benson made her debut in the 1983 Kenny Ortega-directed " Marilyn: An American Fable". Other Broadway credits include a starring role in the 1986 Broadway musical Smile, where she introduced a song called "Disneyland". In 1987, Howard Ashman, the lyricist of Smile, would go on to write the lyrics for The Little Mermaid. She describes the song "Disneyland" at the "Smile" Reunion concert held on September 22, 2014, "This is the first piece of the puzzle of my life, the first step of the journey, so to speak". [ citation needed] Benson also sings "Disneyland" on a compilation CD called Unsung Musicals. In 1989, Benson appeared in the Broadway musical, Welcome to the Club, alongside Samuel E. Wright, who performed the voice for Sebastian the Crab in The Little Mermaid. a b Duncan, Amy (March 15, 2010). "10 things you probably didn't know about The Little Mermaid". Metro . At the behest of Disney executives Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg, director and screenwriter Ron Clements was among several film-makers instructed to research new story ideas that could potentially be adapted into the studio's next major animated film release. [3] Clements first discovered Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairy tale " The Little Mermaid" at a local bookstore, and began deliberating why Disney had never attempted to adapt the story before. [3] Clements eventually learned that Walt Disney himself had actually attempted to adapt the fairy tale into a feature-length animated film as early as the 1930s, [4] but the project was ultimately shelved due in part to its sad ending. [5] [3] Clements suggested "The Little Mermaid" to Katzenberg, who finally green-lit it after having first rejected it. [4] I heard " Part of Your World", Jodi Benson singing that, and it just captivated me. I have to do that. And I went and told those guys, "I really wanna do Ariel." And they said, "Well, I don't know. This is supposed to be a pretty girl. Can you do that?" I said, "Look, I have to do Ariel. I mean, I can feel it in my heart." Disney Princess Christmas Album CD". Ursula has appeared in various Disney Press novels and tie-ins for the franchise. A comic book series, Disney's The Little Mermaid, was released in 1992, revolving around the adventures of Ariel living under the sea as a mermaid. Ursula appears in a few issues, notably "Serpent Teen", which depicts how Ursula obtained the sea serpent carcass that makes her home. [79] My Side of the Story: Ursula (2004) retells the plot of the film from Ursula's point of view, and depicts Ursula having romantic feelings for Triton. [80] The Villain Files (2005) depicts Ursula's youth living in Triton's castle while Ariel was a baby. [81]Carroll, Kathleen (November 15, 1989). " 'The Little Mermaid' is a must sea: 1989 review".
