No natural tree can prune itself, and neither can we. Our attempts at self-pruning will always be disastrous. We don't see ourselves as the Father does, and so we would prune the wrong branches or do an incomplete job. We need to entrust the job to the Master Pruner who knows His trees, who loves them, and has an eternal plan for them. The nutriment that sustains this new hope and makes it grow strong is the Word of God, especially the promises. Nigeria is in conflict due to possible corruption in rec national elections. Aglow is positioned for such a time as this in Nigeria to crush the chaos and bring truth and peace. This outpouring of the Holy Spirit that began at Pentecost is continuing all over the world today. Men, women, and children alike are being baptized in the Holy Spirit by Jesus. All Christians receive the Holy Spirit at salvation, but to become effective Christians they need to also receive the empowering of the Holy Spirit.

So the answer is, Yes, God can and does command his people to rejoice. Even though joy is not controlled by our will-power, and even though it is a fruit of God’s Spirit and beyond our natural resources, nevertheless we are commanded to have this experience! Look! You will summon nations you’ve never heard of. In the earlier part of his letter, Paul clearly demonstrated that anointed Christians, whether Jewish or Gentile, were declared righteous before God by faith, not by works. ( Rom. 1:16; 3:20-24) In chapter 12, Paul explains that Christians should show their gratitude by a life of self-sacrifice. To that end, we have to make our minds over. Through inherited imperfection, we are subject to “the law of sin and of death.” ( Rom. 8:2) We, therefore, need to be transformed, “be made new in the force actuating [our] mind,” by radically changing our inclinations. ( Eph. 4:23) Such a complete change can be brought about only with the help of God and his spirit. It also requires serious effort on our part, using our “power of reason.” It means that we do our utmost not to be “fashioned after this system of things” with its corrupt morals, debased entertainment, and warped thinking.​— Eph. 2:1-3. Although we would like to experience more spiritual fruit, we know only too well how often our lives fall short of resembling Christ's. Instead of being discouraged, however, we can see what God has promised us through Scripture. How then do we obey the commandment to rejoice? How do we fight for joy in the ups and downs of everyday life?

So there is plenty of biblical evidence that Christian joy is not the mere product of the human spirit in response to pleasant circumstances. It is the product, or fruit, of God’s Spirit. And it is not just a human joy; it is the very joy of Christ fulfilled in us.

Today we focus on the first fruit of hope. Our text is the first phrase in Romans 12:12 — “Rejoice in hope!” We could paraphrase it like this: “Let your joy be the joy that comes from hope!” Or: “Bear the fruit of joy in the branch of hope!” Or: “Be glad because you have hope!” The text establishes a firm relationship between joy and hope! Why does this joy vanish so easily? Why is it superficial and flimsy? Evidently because it was not a joy in God but merely in some of the comforts that God might give. When the afflictions and the persecutions and the hard times come, and the comforts disappear, so does the joy. Because it was not the fruit of the Spirit; it was not the joy of Christ that delights in God no matter what the external circumstances are. And since the text says, “Rejoice in hope,” we ask, “How does hope figure into our obedience to this command?” And since we have seen that Christian joy is a fruit of the Spirit, we must also ask, “How do the Holy Spirit and hope relate to each other in producing joy?”The first two requirements are not hard to understand. When we become Christians, Jesus comes to live in us. If we read, meditate on, and obey the Scriptures, His words live in our hearts. However, Jesus has also said that we must remain in Him. Separated from Him, we will die spiritually. It is essential that we understand this principle: Natural life can produce nothing spiritual; only when we are united to the source of spiritual life can we bear spiritual fruit.
