Males battle savagely and a loser that can’t escape could also be killed, which is one of the interesting Bush Baby facts. There are around 20 species of bush babies and each one is tiny, with an average size similar to that of a squirrel with weights around seven ounces. They earned their English name due to the childlike cries they emit. Their cries are rather loud and shrill, which is exceptionally similar to a human child. In addition to these cries, they also make a variety of sounds like chattering, cloaking, croaking, and even shrill whistles. The bush baby has a few different common names. These include nagapy, meaning “night monkey” in Afrikaans, and galago, which refers to the animal’s taxonomical classification within the family Galagidae.

Though they are fairly reclusive, bush babies socialize with one another, most often through playful behaviors and grooming. Despite their small size and endearing appearance, bush babies are not permitted to be kept as pets in many areas. Exotic pet ownership is illegal in many states across the United States. The Lesser Galago has two breeding seasons. One is in November and the other is at the end of February. Males fight with one another for the attention of females until the largest male has chased off all of the others. They mark their territory, including the female, with their urine. Some Galago species have one partner while others have multiple partners. Lesser bush babies are sometimes called galagos and nagapies. The word nagapie translates to ‘night monkey.’ They got the name ‘bush baby’ because their cry sounds a lot like a human baby’s cry.

Some galago species look very similar! Scientists studying the vocal communication between bush babies have helped separate different species, originally thought to be the same one.
