About this deal

Despite having an episode named after it, the Mind Flayer is not physically present in said episode. Meanwhile, the kids have been learning more about the Mind Flayer’s plans and discovering that more and more people from the town have been “flayed” — aka taken over and are now essentially mindless zombie puppets.

Mind flayer eyes were extremely sensitive to bright light, and they considered it painful, a characteristic that some githyanki scholars attributed to the fact that their alien anatomy focused light in a strange way. [10] In fact, their eyes were more sensitive to infravision than to visible light, [20] so that the entirety of their visual acuity was through darkvision, [18] [note 1] and they could see two additional colors in the spectrum beyond the color red. [55] However, their visual acuity decreased as ambient light increased, as their white sclera became increasingly opaque. In total darkness or under starlight, a mind flayer could see clearly as far out as 480 feet (150 meters), but under direct sunlight that infravisual range decreased to just 15 feet (4.6 meters). [20] [23] Mind flayer vision was also more sensitive to the recognition of geometric patterns than that of other humanoids. [56] The entity was gigantic, looming at least fifty stories tall [1], and sported a distinctive spider-like appearance. The Mind Flayer exercised supreme control of the Upside Down via a psychic link, with Demogorgons, vines, and Demobats forming a shared hive mind; for a period in 1985, possessed humans known as "the Flayed" also comprised part of the hive mind. In a sense, the entirety of the Upside Down was like one gigantic organism, with all its contents and agents mentally connected via the Mind Flayer. A silver crown levitated above Maanzecorian's head with a gem of brightness embedded inside, though the light had no ill effects on illithids. Illithids were all sexless, without male or female biological sex, [62] and once or twice in their life they would lay a clutch of eggs from which tadpoles hatched. The tadpoles were kept in the elder brain tank, where they were fed brains by caretakers and engaged in cannibalism for around ten years. [6] The elder brain also fed exclusively on tadpoles. Tadpoles that survived to maturity were put through the ceremony of ceremorphosis, where each was implanted into a humanoid victim and devoured its brain, taking its place and merging with the body to transform it into a new illithid. Only some humanoid species were suitable hosts for illithid tadpoles. [2] [6] [63]

Season Two

The death of god had many repercussions, and as a god of knowledge, information literally comprised much of his spirit. Wisps of his very essence scattered from Maanzecorian's dying body, bathing the surrounding area in eons of collected secrets. Random bits of knowledge would come into the minds nearby uninvited, similar to one of the disorienting psychic storms of the Astral Plane. Though a few of his proxies, namely mind flayers known as Dleniacorus and Hananolith, managed to escape, their ties to him were too strong and they soon died in unimaginably horrific agony. If, for some reason, a mature tadpole did not undergo the process of ceremorphosis, it became a ravenous predatory creature known as an illithocyte or, if allowed to grow out of control, a neothelid. These creatures were considered abhorrent by the illithids and were mercilessly hunted. [2] [65] Illithid Monsters Pen’serre, a small illithid settlement roughly translated as "Place of Contemplative Study" busily analyzed the ramifications of Maanzecorian's death both on its own and for their race specifically around the mid-13 th century DR. As part of their studies, the Awaiter Creed illithids sought to locate, retrieve, and preserve the remains of the Philosoflayer's library, a challenging task given that it was raided upon his death by various factions, scattering the contents across the multiverse. Though Vecna's control of the Mind Flayer's hive mind made him powerful, the two-way nature of the psychic connection was also a point of vulnerability. Any pain felt by the connected entities was shared amongst them; the physical suffering of his thralls would translate to every other being in the hive mind, including Vecna himself. This made the hive mind a prime target for his enemies.Aerdrie Faenya | Angharradh | Corellon | Deep Sashelas | Erevan | Fenmarel Mestarine | Hanali Celanil | Labelas Enoreth | Rillifane Rallathil | Sehanine Moonbow | Shevarash | Solonor Thelandira In November 1983, an interdimensional gateway was opened at Hawkins National Laboratory. As a result, an alien biological growth originating from the mysterious Upside Down began to spread through and consume the lower levels of the lab. After biting her with one of its tentacles, the Mind Flayer's proxy left a piece of itself inside Eleven, severely weakening her telekinesis later that evening; her powers would eventually fade completely, and would not be restored until the events of March 1986. Illithids were megalomaniacal in the extreme, tyrants driven by an immense ambition [16] and intrinsically ruled by an overwhelming sense of self-importance. [22] The mind flayers sought nothing less than world domination, [16] knew their destiny was mastery over the universe, [22] and the ultimate prize they yearned for was complete dominion over all the planes of existence, with the power to reshape reality and all within it to fit their otherworldly designs. [16] However, mind flayers did not believe themselves to be horrifying monsters. [21] The dimensional barrier puts hard limits on the Mind Flayer's ability to take over other worlds. However, if the barrier is damaged, the Mind Flayer is able to exert more and more influence in another dimension.

Maanzecorian's priesthood was concerned with pursuing and exploiting knowledge (such as that gained from exploring new territory), and negotiating with other races, always to be done from a position of strength and with an element of condescension. His following was not only small, but also select, [6] the veneration of Maanzecorian never having been able to reach Ilsensine's level of influence, [15] although the clergy was kept small partially because Maanzecorian didn't want to give off the impression that he was trying to usurp Ilsensine's primacy. [18] While it did not actually harm them, illithids absolutely despised sunlight, avoiding it at all costs. [57] They required only the heat created by the geothermic processes of planets to survive. [23] Most mind flayers could not imagine living in the sun without some form of protection. from the desiccating effect it had on their skins to the clouding of their vision, and the mere thought of being immersed in sunlight was as horrifying to them as drowning in blood would be to a human. Little was known about Maanzecorian, [11] and given that the illithids themselves were mysteries of the cosmos, it was practically impossible to discern the origins of him or Ilsensine. [15]
