About this deal

If your child is scared of the flush, start by flushing it while they stand by the bathroom door, then gradually ask them to come a little closer. When they are near enough, encourage them to put just a little bit of toilet paper in the toilet to flush away. When they have their nappy on, encourage them to sit on the potty or toilet when they are doing a poo (and then do the above). To help to make sure they are in the seated position always make sure that feet are supported with their hips and knees in a slight squatting position and their bottom is well supported. They are going to poo more easily when these things are in place. Toilet training is a journey of small victories ending in the triumphant moment when you first hear the splash of number twos landing inside the toilet bowl. But for some toddlers, doing poo in the toilet is a little more challenging. The noise of flushing can put some toddlers off pooing in the toilet, so just forgo it until they’ve left the bathroom. Once they’re comfortable with using the toilet to poo, you can slowly introduce flushing the loo. 7. Read all about it This last year or so though I need several times a day without much warning (so I’ll not need then suddenly I’m bursting!) I’m also having to get up in the night which I’d never had to do! I’m not old but I’m not very young now either and it’s not been pregnancy or childbirth and I’ve no specific bladder issues or diabetes etc so it’s just a random change to what was my normal as happens in life as you age.

Allow them to put the nappy on to do the poo but then take the nappy off, tip the poo into the toilet and then let your child flush it away. This is the start of your child making the connection that to poo in the toilet is going to be ok and natural. You may also have other symptoms, such as constipation, diarrhoea, farting or bloating. When to get medical advice Try to fill your lungs, breathing through your mouth to prevent straining and contracting your pelvic floor (diaphragmatic breathing)

8. Put a stepping stool in the toilet

Only try this a maximum of 3 times. If it does not work, get up from the toilet and walk around. It may help to try having a warm/hot drink. How to sit on the toilet

For some children they can have the sense that something is ‘falling out of them’, which if you are little and don’t understand that this is completely normal and healthy, it can be quite worrying. If you'd prefer not to see a GP, you may be able to make an appointment at an NHS continence service instead. Call your local hospital for details of your nearest service. Treatments for bowel incontinence There are some great toilet training books that help teach kids to learn to poo on the potty in a playful way. You can also try reading to your child while they’re on the toilet. 8. Put a stepping stool in the toilet It can be very upsetting and embarrassing, but it's important to get medical advice if you have it because treatment can help. Signs and symptoms

2. Making the toilet less scary

Joshua, who had a mild learning disability, was 8 years old. He’d had poo problems ever since he experienced constipation as a toddler which had long since been resolved. Keep your little one healthy with their intake of fluids, a healthy diet and exercise. All of these things help to keep things moving through the body and avoid constipation. As I mention above, have a look at our blog on constipationas this also has some useful information on what poo should look like. Step 5: Over the next several weeks Peter gradually loosened the nappy until it was opened out flat on the toilet seat. It may sound strange, but letting kids watch their pets do poo can help, particularly if you have a cat that goes in a litter box. Explain that this is the cat’s toilet, and she poops in the toilet – hopefully your kiddo will want to copy! 6. Don’t flush

If you’re experiencing difficulties with flushing your stool, it could be a sign that you’re not digesting dietary fats properly. This can be caused by a number of different health conditions, including celiac disease, pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, lactose intolerance, and inflammatory bowel disease. If you’re concerned, be sure to speak with your doctor to get to the bottom of the issue. Peter was 9 years old when he was referred to the continence service with a request for one nappy a day. A highly intelligent boy, Peter was the middle brother of three. I call on you as Head of State to ensure that India rises to the challenge of ending open defecation. As a citizen of India, I am proud of our country's rich and varied culture; we have a beautiful land. However, over 620 million people do not use a toilet and nearly as many accept this practice. The result is an unacceptable level of filth in our environment. This is why I have chosen to take a stand and raise my voice with that of many other young people. We want our sisters and brothers to survive, grow and develop as healthy individuals in a clean country. We urgently request your help. Together we can change India.Step 1: Joshua’s parents marked a cross on the spot in his bedroom where he always went to poo. They used green (his favourite colour) insulating tape as it peeled off the floor easily. Take your time. There’s no rush. If you’re feeling constipated, try to relax and let your body do its thing. Make sure that your knees are bent and are higher than your hips (it may help to use a footstool if your toilet is high or you are not very tall)

Step 9: now George will have to be introduced to the toilet, and over time learn to sit on it. Perhaps Peter's story can suggest some steps towards this. Have a basket of toys or books which can be just for ‘toilet time’ and can encourage your child to stay on the toilet a little longer. If they are on the toilet longer then it can help with understanding the sensation of needing to poo and giving it time for this to happen. You'll be asked to undress from the waist down for the rectal exam. You can ask for a male or female doctor or nurse. Poorly treated constipation as a toddler had led to toilet avoidance, despite appointments with the paediatrician, gastroenterologist, psychologist and school nurse. Nothing any of them had said had ever affected his toileting behaviour. Peter said that they always focussed on the toilet – but that had nothing to do with him as he always stood to wee and wore a nappy in his bedroom to poo. Poop is a word that is used to describe feces or waste products from the body. The word is of American origin and was first used in the 19th century. It became more popular in the 1920s and was eventually adopted by the British in the 1940s. Why wont my poop flushHotjar sets this cookie to identify a new user’s first session. What happens at your GP appointment Step 8: Once a small piece of nappy was enough, it could be exchanged for a pad of toilet paper. Peter could then flush the toilet; his Mum didn’t have to retrieve bits of wet, pooey nappy from the toilet any more.
