About this deal

So the point is, you make your wet palette in the lid of the container, not the base. This is why I said at the top you want a container with a flat lid and handles on the base. The flat lid means you have a flat palette and the handles being on the base means they don’t get in the way when the lid (as the palette) on your desk.

The main function of a palette is that it keeps your paint wet for much longer, hours or days, even weeks if necessary. This immediately saves paint as it can go on your model instead of dry on your palette. This is where things may get a little difficult. RGG’s instructions state you should keep adding water until there is a thin layer of water sitting on top of the foam. I waited until the majority of the water was absorbed by the foam and then added a few more drops until the foam was soggy and saturated to the touch. People were starting to rave about how good products it was and the quirkiness of my own solution had started to grate on me. The first one on the list which is made specifically by a company who specialises in wargames and model paints. This article is part of our series looking at The Best Hobby Tools for Miniatures and Wargames Models. As the 2 Litre, Food Storage container is almost directly comparable to the most commonly bought Everlasting Wet Palette, we will be using this container for the rest of the guide. Absorbent Layer You get fifty sheets of hydration paper with the Painter Lite – a high number of sheets to suit the longevity of use this item ought to receive. If you’re not familiar with hydration paper, it looks and feels like tracing paper – or baking paper if you’re a budding cook. The Hydration Foam Pads This is a really large wet-palette, designed for fine-art. When I say really large, It’s huge. With the workable area measuring at 36.8 x 26.7cm (14.5″ x 10.5″) and the outer dimensions at 40.6 x 30.5cm (16″ x 12″), it takes up a lot of real estate on your desktop. If you’ve been in the miniature painting hobby for any significant amount of time, chances are you’ve come across a wet palette. You know what it looks like – and the Painter Lite does not deviate from the standard rectangular design. No need to really – as long as it does the job. The box itself is typical of The Army Painter style. Clearly advertises what the product is and what comes in the box.

This is usually avoided by not closing the lid all the way down. That way the water will slowly evaporate instead, avoiding the mould. That aside, as before, there was little to note with the metallic paint, other than I had to frequently agitate it on the palette to stop it separating too much – but such is to be expected of dealing with metallic paints anyway. Make sure you give your pot a good shake before applying any to your palette, and then just make sure you keep stirring it as you use it. Metallic paints: as shiny as ever. The paper is really good on this one and the benefit of this – like with any wet-palette is that you have the convenience of not having to cut sheets of paper every time you need them. After having sworn myself to a DIY wet palette solution for many years, finally there is a solution that I think improves on enough aspects to be worth my money. It’s also one of those cool items where you can hide the costs in your weekly shopping and not have to explain to anyone why you’re spending so much money on your hobby (this tip may be useful for some people reading). What Makes a Good Wet Palette? There you go, it’s a simple process with one minor (yes probably obvious) tweak you have a great wet palette that will last years.

You want something relatively think and very absorbent. in the UK I use Blitz. it’s a bit more a slightly more expensive paper towel. This prevents creasing and it soaks up water really well, keeping itself wet. I find the XL version to be too big for my tastes, but there are probably people where it is very important for that much space. The paper here works. I put paint on top, water is absorbed through it, the paint stays wet. Using a plasticard to smooth out wrinkles In this guide, I’m first going to show you how to make a Wet Palette from a Tupperware container the wrong way. Don’t worry, the steps are correct, I’m not misleading you. I’m just taking you through the way I used to build my wet palette, an annoyance I had with it. It’s something to be aware of if you’ve left your palette a while, if you’re painting on a warm day, or, like me, live in rented accommodation and are limited to painting in your sweatbox of a conservatory because it’s the only space you’ve got.

This is an odd option if I’m honest, Firstly that there are 2 sheets of paper between the paint and foam. 1 your usual semi-permeable layer. And 2, a layer called a wipe, which is an absorbent cloth fibre layer. The Everlasting wet palette is just one of those tools where you get it in the hand and think “yes, this is exactly how I want it”.

RGG’s Everlasting Wet Palette comes in three forms: a Starter set, a Painter set, and a Studio XL option. All have similar features and contents, give or take a few sheets of hydration paper and the small, white, magnetic attachment for your inks and washes that RGG have called the, uh, “Wavy accessory”. The lid closes in a nice clean way (airtight), but it is also possible to leave a small gap to let water come out (in case it will take a while before your next session). It can hold water for a very long time (I hated it when my DIY solutions dried out). If you need to take it somewhere, you need to be able to do that without getting water all over the place If you have used wet palettes before, then RedGrass Games are as top a brand for them as you get, and to buy any wet palette from them would service your hobby well. Whether the Painter Lite elevates your hobby experience would really depend on what you want out of it. Need to save desk space? Need something that is functionally reliable and will keep your paints fresh for a week? Then the Painter Lite is as good as gold.

As noted above this is the same area as the recess for the tray so it has a nice comfortable fit. But here, along with the paper is the first issue with the palette. You wet the absorbent layer and put the permeable paper on top of this. Any paint put on top of that will absorb water through from below, keeping it wet. The paper should transport some amount of water to the paint, making it easier to thin your paint to the right consistency. If you have extended beyond the initial palette area with colours, or you have a friend over to paint with you you can add your second hydro foam into the lid. Add some water and hydro paper and away you go, a second wet palette for the rest of your painting session. It’s slightly limited however due to the domed design, you can only really use the inner area of the dome. I think it would have been better here to consider this use case and make the design intentional. But for a makeshift solution. It’s nice that this is at least possible.
