About this deal

Little ones will be charmed by this sweet and silly story of friendship."--Booklist Online, February 2015 This three-week Writing Root would best be begun with a discussion about friendship. The children write a complete story about a two seemingly different characters, which they write in the third person and using the past tense. They use adverbs to sequence and add cohesion, as well as conjunctions to write compoundsentences ( but and and). Synopsis of Text:

Just as the orange bird brightens Yeti’s world, these two will warm the hearts of young readers. Told with exceptional economy and striking art, this tale of an unusual friendship is a great choice for all libraries. Mary Jean Smith, Southside Elementary School, Lebanon, TN Renata’s wren encounter proves magical, one most children could only wish to experience outside of this lovely story. The “BIGGEST, hairiest, scariest beast” around was lonely. No one in the forest wanted to play with him until someone new fell from the sky and showed everyone how fun and sweet the big guy could be. Yeti lives alone in a wintery landscape. Well, maybe not quite alone, but no one is brave enough to go near big, scary Yeti. No one apart from Bird, who gets lost on her way south, makes a special friend, and opens up a whole new world for our Yeti. Text Rationale:

Write a diary entry from the point of view of the yeti. How does he spend his days? How does he feel? A simple tale, told in a gentle way, with lovely illustrations, a good bedtime book Burnley Express The illustrations are lovely with lots of detail, lots of great scenery shown with woodlands, mountains and sunsets and lots of cute animals too!

This is a touching story of an unlikely friendship that has such a beautiful end ... that it gladdens the heart to think that even the grumpiest of the grumps would read this and feel a little tingle of hope that somewhere out there, there truly is a friend for everyone. Read It Daddy blog Imagine that you have seen a yeti. Write a description of it using lots of adjectives, similes and metaphors.

Storytime Themes

This is a beautiful tale of forming unlikely friendships with others from different worlds. The text has strong PSHE links, exploring friendship and how we form new relationships with others. The book also has solid links to geography as different landscapes are explored. Nadia Shireen is a significant, award-winning author and illustrator and children will enjoy exploring her other titles on their own. Can you think of any other superlatives? When are they used in writing? Yeti and the Bird is a beautifully illustrated story about an unlikely friendship between a big scary Yeti, and a little bird, and how this saved the Yeti from his life of loneliness.

Spelling Seeds have been designed to complement Writing Roots by providing weekly, contextualised sequences of sessions for the teaching of spelling that include open-ended investigations and opportunities to practise and apply within meaningful and purposeful contexts, linked (where relevant) to other areas of the curriculum and a suggestion of how to extend the investigation into home learning. A home-renovation project is interrupted by a family of wrens, allowing a young girl an up-close glimpse of nature. The characters are great and the little bird shows that there was no need for anyone to be afraid of the Yeti – a reminder not just to judge on first impressions, and to give people a chance. The story shows how a small and totally unexpected event ending up turning around everything for the lonely Yeti! Retell the story from the bird’s point of view. Where did she come from? How did he first feel when she met Yeti? But what made this picture book one of my favorite reads so far this year was the sweet, simple message. Don’t judge a book by the cover. A message I know we all know, but comes through with such fun and love and life for young readers here. A message that needs to be said again and again. We all should remember to look past appearances or reputations or even growls to see someone’s heart. Yeti and Bird give the idea and heartfelt message a new feel and look. I mean what’s not to love about a Yeti? :D There is a Spelling Seed session for every week of the associated Writing Root. Coverage: Common Exception Words
