About this deal

The paint has a lovely viscosity to it, no water required (unless spraying of course). The paint just flows from the brush, making it a pleasure to work with. Our trade paint emulsion is available in a selection of neutral colour choices ranging from pure brilliant white to magnolia and classic grey. With tin sizes ranging from 2.5L to 15L, choose the right size for the job in a range of finishes including eggshell, gloss, matte, satin and silk. Not suitable for ceilings due to the potential for flashing with natural light (I recommend MacPherson’s Eclipse for ceilings) Anti-Reflex 2 in white and Macpherson Eclipse don’t picture frame, go patchy and I’ve touched it in without issue. The big difference the Perfect Matt is how white the paint is. I’m a big Anti-Reflex fan, but the Perfect Matt is definitely the crispest, bright white I’ve ever seen.

Valspar Tough Matt is a superior choice for pure brilliant white emulsion, especially when compared with brands like Dulux Diamond Matt. It offers superb coverage and a pleasing finish. Just remember to thin it down and mix well before application, and you’re all set. I’ve tried plenty of retail paints out of curiosity and the consistency is usually so watery that it’s a nightmare to apply with all the splashes. Of course, because it’s so watered down, it can sometimes take 6 coats to cover dark colours. As you can see from the photos, I marked the walls with Tomato Ketchup (Heinz), mustard and a non-permanent pen. I felt this was a great way to review it’s durability. These compounds crop up everywhere, from fertiliser to cosmetics, and are better known as CIT and MIT, respectively. Some people are sensitive to these chemicals, so give yourself a while to acclimatise after opening the tin or tub, rather than rushing into a job you may have to suspend midway through.Ever since changing over to MacPherson Eclipse, there’s nothing else I’d consider using. Tikkurila AR2 is a quality white ceiling paint but it’s just too expensive considering Eclipse does the same job. Streaks and picture framing apparent even after 3 coats which are supposed to be non existent with this paint. If you’re worried that this is going to make your surface look shiny, you don’t need to be. Most emulsions come in a flat or matt finish which essentially means you’ll be getting a pure, modern white look without the high sheen. How to Paint Using Emulsion I have been asked to write a Johnstone’s Perfect Matt white review for the Decorators Forum UK. I have recently used the emulsion on a kitchen ceiling that was separated into two sections. So couldn’t really test it over a large ceiling for how it’s meant stop overlap marks and picture framing from occurring.

The ceiling was fresh plaster, I normally apply a mist coat of contract matt in the same brand I’m using as a top coat, unless there’s a specified undercoat. Unfortunately, I had already bought the paint for my current job, so I ended up doing the mist coat in Tikkurila Optiva Primer. I couldn’t wait to get going with the Johnstone’s Perfect Matt. Crown promotes this emulsion as non-yellowing with a non-reflective finish. You’ll have to explore the broader range of Crown paints if you want different colours. Summary Covaplus is an unbeatable choice for achieving a consistent, pleasing look throughout your home. This white emulsion paint is not just about exceptional finish and durability, but also about providing value for money, making it my go-to choice for my own projects. Value is the only thing counting against Johnstone’s entry, which has the widest choice of colours and offers generous coverage. However, costing almost twice as much per litre as Dulux’s offering, it’s simply too expensive. On the other hand, if I’m painting over lighter colours, I would go with Covaplus because it’s a dream to apply. White Emulsion: Trade or Retail? In my opinion, trade almost always trumps retail paint and that’s why 5 out of the 6 paints I’ve recommended in this guide are trade standard.

Some white emulsions aren’t as good-looking as others but are way more durable and can withstand up to 10,000 scrubs. Emulsion paint comes in various colours, usually pale or pastel. Our shortlisted Johnstone’s paint comes in 35 hues, while Dulux offers 30 shades other than the Pure Brilliant White tested here. So, to ensure our review is fair, we’ve chosen the same shade of paint for all three shortlisted products. As briefly touched upon above, buying white emulsion isn’t as straightforward as choosing any old paint and slapping it on your walls and ceilings. Here are some things to consider before buying your paint: For sheer diversity, it’s hard to look beyond Dulux’s range of emulsion paints. Although we’re reviewing the five-litre Pure Brilliant White Matt emulsion, it’s possible to get seven other finishes, from satin and silk to gloss and eggshell. You can buy 30ml tester pots and various tin sizes containing anything from 0.75 litres to five litres.Unwanted Food or Drink Products - Once supply conditions are broken, there are a number of factors outside of our control that can affect the quality of a product. Therefore perishable goods such as food and drink cannot be returned.

The consistency of Covaplus is ideal, providing an effortless application without the need for thinning. Plus, it offers flexibility when used on plaster, where it can be watered down as a mist-coat before using it straight from the tin for the top coats. I noted that Good Home’s White Emulsion is less flat than its previous version and slightly less opaque. However, it is more durable. While it’s a decent choice for retail gear and rental properties, I wouldn’t recommend it for personal use, particularly when compared to paints such as Johnstone’s Durable Matt.Finding the best white emulsion paint can help you totally transform your living space and in some cases even increase the value of your property. They offer a timeless, elegant look and are great for making your rooms look bigger as well as lighter. Albany Supercover offers exceptional quality and coverage. Despite a few minor issues, it’s a worthwhile choice, especially for transformations involving light shades over dark colours. It was my go-to before Covaplus, and it certainly holds a premium standard in my book. Valspar Tough Matt, my preferred pure brilliant white emulsion, is an impressive product with standout qualities. When compared with brands like Dulux, specifically its Pure Brilliant White Emulsion, Valspar Tough Matt outshines in terms of coverage, rendering Dulux’s version quite disappointing. MacPherson Eclipse is a flat emulsion that’s hugely popular with professional decorators with some refusing to use anything but this on ceilings.
