We made each coffee using a Nespresso machine that had performed well in our coffee machine tests, and asked our experts to taste it both with and without milk. Water has minerals that pass through your coffee machine, which build up over time. If you let the limescale build up over a long time period, it can prevent the machine from reaching the optimal temperature, and your device can stop working altogether. Moreover, you can have stale or sour coffee. You do not have to worry about losing the warranty on your machine through using compatible pods for Nespresso®. We rarely hear of machines breaking down because of compatible pods - even when we sell more than 100,000 compatible pods a week. No! You don’t need special cleaners or chemicals when cleaning your Nespresso Vertuo; plain old soap and water will do just fine! However, if you do want to use special cleaning products made specifically for espresso machines, make sure they are non-abrasive so as not to damage any internal components of your device. Also note that some detergents contain chlorine which could leave behind an unpleasant taste in your coffee – so only use these products if necessary!
Pour your descaling solution in according to the manufacturer's instructions. Vinegar and water may also be used if the owner's manual for your machine says it will not cause harm. Next, place an extra-large cup or mug underneath the machine's spout. Hold down both buttons on the top of the machine for three seconds. The Nespresso machine will then enter a descaling cycle. This will take a few minutes. There’s no colored indicator light, and there’s no button inside the top of the machine. Instead, start by by filling the water reservoir with clean water. Then place a 20oz container under the spout. Close the capsule container lid at the top of the machine and press the button 3 times within 2 seconds to initiate the cleaning cycle. Keep your container in place for up to 5 minutes as water runs through the system. Before you start cleaning your Nespresso's exterior and tank, you'll begin by getting its interior clean first, by descaling. It’s important to descale your coffee device to keep it working properly and to have coffee tasting the way it should. Don’t leave the used capsule in the holder; open and close the lid to drop the used capsule into the container for trash. If you leave the old capsule in the machine head, you’ll get more coffee residue in your cup (I learned this the hard way). A general recommendation is to descale a coffee machine every three months or after every used 300 pods. However, this depends on your water hardness levels (harder water = more frequent descaling). If you notice a difference in coffee taste or that the coffee is running slower than usual don’t wait three months but descale as soon as you can.
