About this deal

Root beer is a carbonated soft drink that is flavored with extracts from various plant roots, such as sassafras, sarsaparilla, and birch. It became popular in the 19th century as a non-alcoholic alternative to beer and was commonly consumed as a refreshing beverage. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Charles Hires would have a lot to feel flattered about. The success of his commercial root beer sales soon inspired competition. Here are some of the most notable root beer brands. Root beer has been drunk in the United States since at least the eighteenth century. It has been sold in confectionery stores since at least the 1840s, and written recipes for root beer have been documented since the 1860s. In the nineteenth century, it was often consumed hot. It was combined with soda as early as the 1850s; at that time it was sold as a syrup rather than a ready-made beverage. [4]

Safrole, the aromatic oil found in sassafras roots and bark that gave traditional root beer its distinctive flavor, was banned in commercially mass-produced foods and drugs by the FDA in 1960. [1] Laboratory animals that were given oral doses of sassafras tea or sassafras oil that contained large doses of safrole developed permanent liver damage or various types of cancer. [1] While sassafras is no longer used in commercially produced root beer and is sometimes replaced with artificial flavors, natural extracts with the safrole distilled and removed are available. [11] [12] Traditional method With these candies we’re pushing the definition of root beer barrels – because they’re not actually barrels at all. But they’re such a great option for root beer lovers, we had to include them! We only lost one game in our league but that was the day I woke up tired and forgot my root beer barrel. I still don’t know if it was because they were a better team or because I broke game tradition. I really believe the root beer barrels held that much of a significance but that’s just me. Right after the games I would get a root beer barrel as soon as I walked inside my house. Some root beer barrels are individually wrapped, while others aren’t. Individual wrapping means more plastic is used, so it’s less environmentally sustainable. Note that the color comes from artificial sources – Yellow 6, Red 40 and Blue 1 food colorings. These can cause hyperactivity in children who are sensitive to them.

Another competing story is that the candy was first made by a man named David Garber. Garber was the owner of a candy shop in Baltimore, Maryland. There is no clear evidence to support either story. And they also contain a lot of sugar. There’s more sugar, in fact, than any other ingredient. Each candy contains 30 calories.

They’re not individually wrapped, so they’re not the most hygienic choice if you’re handing them around a crowd Not all traditional or commercial root beers were sassafras-based. One of Hires's early competitors was Barq's, which began selling its sarsaparilla-based root beer in 1898 and was labeled simply as "Barq's". [10] Ehler, James (2022). "Root beer: why does it foam so much?". FoodReference.com . Retrieved 21 April 2022. But if you are watching your weight or worried about tooth decay, there are other options. Both IBC and Ice Chips offer sugar-free formulations. In both cases, they’re very tasty. But they are more expensive. And the IBC version uses artificial sweeteners, to which some people are intolerant. IBC’s root beer candies are shaped like the traditional barrel. And they’re sugar-free, making them a great choice for your teeth as well as your waistline!

One traditional recipe for making root beer involves cooking a syrup from molasses and water, letting the syrup cool for three hours, and combining it with the root ingredients (including sassafras root, sassafras bark, and wintergreen). Yeast was added, and the beverage was left to ferment for 12 hours, after which it was strained and rebottled for secondary fermentation. This recipe usually resulted in a beverage of 2% alcohol or less, although the recipe could be modified to produce a more alcoholic beverage. [13] Foam Some people will enjoy the milder flavor of home-made root beer. Others like the more intense hit of commercially produced versions.
